Re: Brent's Van (uante)
It's all perspective Twin! The photo is shot at an angle, not straight on...but the only prescription I need is a little more Cowbell!!! http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=prescription+more+cowbell&&view=detail&mid=00269F4EF489F1695D3300269F4EF489F1695D33&rvsmid=47D978463D705C2EC24647D978463D705C2EC246&FORM=VDQVAP&fsscr=0

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
LOL, it's all adjustable. In fact the glove box door is back out until after the paint. I just wanted to get the holes in.
Tomorrow it'll all be back together except for the doors and a few things like the exhaust and back on it's wheels. I want to start it and check out the ride of the new shocks
After that it's paint prep time!

After a month and a half Ivan fires up and is feeling good!
Shocks felt good in the test drive, but didn't really have a good test in the storage area.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Sounds awesome Brent! What do you have for an exhaust? I like that throaty sound!

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
There is no exhaust! lol
It wasn't so bad idling, but got pretty loud at any more than that.
I'm having a new exhaust made, it will be stock and quiet. If I want loud, I'll
drive the Torino

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Went to Tucson last weekend and picked up some parts from a guy there "Gary" who has a ton of stuff. He advertised on craigslist and is pretty cool and fair about things. I got a belly pan, a sway arm assy, and one of the two complete weather strip kits for the two front doors he had along with a couple of small parts.
Taking the belly pan in tomorrow for blasting and after the holidays, putting the doors back on so I can shop it around at paint and body shops for estimates.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Moving right along...
Got back yesterday from California and today put the doors and mirrors on the van so I could drive around on the freeways etc and start getting paint estimates. Taking the van in tomorrow for exhaust, hopefully everything goes smoothly!
While the van was backed out, I put some shelves in the front for parts. Time to get reorganized because I don't have a lot of room to work in.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Thanks. It was a long road to get them back to original. I figure there were 4 different types of mirrors on it including the original style (see page 3). I had to have 13 holes or so welded closed in each door! It was a mess ending with later model chevy mirrors, which looked horrible on there, but functioned well.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Dash finally has the proper holes needed and no more!
Gone are the holes for who knows what that you can see in the before picture. There were also about 8 holes under the lower edge you can't see. I assume for added switches and gadgets? The BIG switch hole near the radio area is gone and the hole where the cigarette light goes that was too small and out of round is fixed to accept the lighter.
Also added holes for the radio and holes for a glovebox door.
Before - 16 holes removed, cigarette lighter hole resized.
Radio and glove box hinge holes added. Gauges and switches removed for painting.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Thanks Vanny...kinda nervous about the color. I'm going with the original '63 Corinthian White for the top and bumpers, but going with '65 Navajo Beige for the rest and the dash. Just couldn't go with plain white with all the white utility vans and trucks driving around.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Everything looks spiffy Brent. I was admiring your under body work. Could you give a little more detail was to what works. It looks like everything gets the wire wheel treatment? What are you spraying on? Fill in the gaps for the novices out here pls.

Re: Brent's Van (uante)
Sure np.
I like doing the bottom this way, but sand blasting is probably better. I just didn't want to spend the $700 or more to have it done. I found out later from AZSupervan that there was a place that would steam pressure wash the bottom for about $150 which would have been good.
Anyway, I got a decent drill and several types of wire brushes from HD and Lowes. A 5" disk (used a lot) and smaller disks, there was a kit which included some wire cups and one small round wire paint brush type thing. They also make an extension for the drill that accepts the disks and cups with the allen head type insert. The extension come in real handy.
Besides the wire brushes for drill I used an old puddy knife, a 5 in 1 tool and several different small hand brushes. I also used rags with alcohol or mineral spirits for cleaning the greasy transmission and other areas.
So with all that, I went though and attacked section by section, getting the majority of the grease and dried dirt and muck off. Then went back and did it all again better and then once more for the final before painting. It can be dangerous with the drill spinning so you have to be mindful of which way you are spinning when you come to edges and it can really catch and rack your knuckles. I use gloves and switch directions often and types of brushes often.
I just used black gloss paint here in Arizona. I have seen people here on this site and my Torino site say they use a really good corrosive preventive paint, I think it's orange in color, which is great but I think it's overkill here in Arizona.
I put a good fan at the front of the vehicle and wear a good mask and start spraying. You get dirty cleaning and dirty painting. There's easier ways to do it if you either have the money to pay or a great garage and equipment like some of these guys have. I'm working in a rental storage shed atm so just gotta make due.

Hey Brent
What did you use for the glovebox door stop/ wire stop. Is it factory or did you make it.

It's just a factory cable. You can get a repo one at Carpenters for like $5
