    radiator erupting Empty radiator erupting

Post by Guest Sun Jun 01, 2008 5:10 pm

I am trying to determine what is wrong with my 66, its a 230, when i fire it up it runs beautiful, no missing, no knocking, if I take off the radiator cap while cold and let run till it heats up and the thermo opens up to see if water flows thru the radiator the water just violently erupts out of the filler hole, is this normal?? I thought the water should just start cycling thru and you can watch it happen through the top of the radiator as the thermo opens up...like my other car. could this mean that my radiatror is extremely plugged up?? or is this normal?? I want to keep this van but need it to run right. Thanx!!

I would take the thermostat out and run the engine again. If it gets violent real fast, the head gasket is probably leaking . To test the radiator, fill it up with water then pull the lower radiator hose off, if the radiator is really clogged up, it will drain out real slowly,,,it should just gush out the lower hose if the radiator is not clogged up.

Well if you fill the Radiator up and then Pull the Bottom hose.... when it's empty you should take a flash Light and Look inside .... the tubes shouldn't Have any water sitting on top of them they should be Clear.... now just cause you can see down them don't mean it's Clean.. because there are tube's you can not see...... But But you will get an Idea of whats going on for sure .......

You might as well get a 3 row if you need it. I think it may cost under $200 if you bring them the radiator

They might run a little hotter than normal, but if you got a good fan blade that is close to the radiator and you don't drive around in over 100 degree weather, the van won't overheat if there are no other problems. When a thermostat sticks closed, the coolant turns violent pretty fast. And pressure testing the cooling system will tell you if the head gasket is bad.
