Hi, Got a 65 GMC Handivan and wondering if its a 1/2 ton? Vin reads G1001PD18*** and in a prior thread it mentioned all 1st gen's started with G12? Looking to pick up some air shocks for the rear and only listings I can find are for 1/2 ton vans. Thanks
G10's and G12's are 1/2tons, but not so sure I would load in a 1/2 ton. Our vans are pretty lite duty. I have a G20 which is a 3/4 ton and it's a little heavier duty for loads.
I was wondering, shouldnt my GMC vin number start with G12 instead of G10? Not that it matters, but just trying to figure out how to decode my vin as well. Thanks again for all the help and input.
Welcome to the greatest secrets of our vans..... the VIN's all the car guys get to know all kind of crap about their's and we are left in the dark to guess at it. Good luck... one thing for sure is if anyone knows the answer they are on here and willing to help
Nos808, I Have a Chevy G1205. Not sure on the G10/G12 thing but was told that G10's were the standard and window vans and the G12's were commercial sales. I have Gabriel-highjacker air shocks on the rear of mine for giving the rear end a little lift just to level things out when towing. But like G-Man said, these vans are pretty light-duty.....
Thanks for all the info. Wont be loading it up very often at all, but wanted to have the option since Im replacing the shocks anyway. Again, all your input is greatly apreciated.
A GMC and a Chevy Van are like 2 different companys,,,,,they use the same parts but they also use different numbers on some of their things. Like Chevy calls it Van a Chevy Van, GMC calls it a HandiVan,,,,, Chevy calls its passenger van a SportVan, GMC calls it a HandiBus. Basically, GMC's were built as a more heavier duty vehicle than a Chevy. But you can consider your van a G10 Chevy, because they are way more common than the GMC version.........
Hi Don, Followed everything up to the end. So even though registered and badged as a GMC, its possible that it was built up as a Chevy? Not that it matters either way to me, just interesting that they would sell it as such from the factory. Great info and definately helpful. This site is by far the best source Ive come across. Thanks again.
Nos808, It is a great site and you can "Search" for topic's we have discussed in the past. I will save you big $$$ and time if you research it first. And if you not sure on something just ask, no matter what it is... someone here has done it or know's someone who has!
The biggest difference is body parts that Gmc's came with,,,,yours is a real GMC,,,,,(you get to act special),,,, I got the factory parts book for the 64-66 GMC vans that I use to identify parts,,,,not good for anything else,,,,,,all parts no longer available. But we improvise,,,,,,,,,,All I am saying is its OK to buy Chevy G10 parts if you run across any,,,,,,
Perfect, that was my main concern being that searching for the Chevy parts seems to be much easier. Thanks for the parts pages as well, more info the better and great for cross reference. Much appreciated.
Now we need to get serious,,,,,you got a 65,,,,,I got a 65,,,,, the most important questions are,,,,,do you have a 5 or 6 slot grille or 1 or 2 latches on the doghouse cover,,,,,,,
Looks like a "Late 65" to me.... after April of 65 and 66 had the extra 6th slot. Guess GM thought that would help with the cooling .... I have a 66 Chevy, same van. look for any 1963-1966 GMC or 1964-1966 Chevrolet Van parts and you should be good to go.
And before anyone comments on it. Yes, GMC released their first G10-Van in late 63....
Thats right, you got a late 65,,,,,,,I got an early 65,,,,,,now the early 65's have 5 slots and 2 latches,,,,,my van says that this makes him a classic rare 1965 van,,,,,,,(the rest of the world says its just leftover 1964 parts, but my van don't like to hear that),,,,,,,,,,,
Hey Don..were the PB series like step vans, bread trucks, newspaper carriers? Man,I get more edjumacated every day in here! Was'nt tryin to thread drift, just wandering.
Great, thanks for all the help and awesome info. I always end up learning alot more than I set out too here. Now, time to put that info to work. Got a long road ahead, but at least its running and legal.
Every year they tried to fix the mistakes they made the year before,,,,,They were so proud that they got it right in 1970, but nobody cared,,,,,they had all moved on to the next Generation,,,,, Don't take what I say too seriously,,,,,I give it a litlle twist to make it entertaining as well as informative,,,,,
Isn't that the way it is with most models? Too many 'bugs' with first year production.About the time its right, body style changes,or replaced with an entirely new model vehicle.
That's the way it is. I'm just now starting to compile a list of parts that are common to all first and second Gen chevy's. Found many other makes and models used the same parts. Even my Jeep CJ has a few parts that are the same as my G10 and a lot of P-series used many of the same parts.
