64 alternator wiring Empty 64 alternator wiring

Post by 64 Hooch Hauler Tue Sep 10, 2013 9:34 am

My alternator has a connector with 2 wires going to it, one is "R" one is "F". The plastic connector part broke apart when I swapped the motor out. Which color wire goes to which terminal?

    Thanks!!

,,,,,,,now if you want to get rid of all that wiring, mechanical voltage regulator, have higher output and actually have the battery charging when you idle,,,,,,

Thanks for the updating information, that will be the plan when this one quits or if I feel bored. I really spend very little time idling, but that really is a better setup. After the the disc brakes maybe.

So to do this, do we disconnect the idiot light wire from the #4 slot on the voltage regulator, then extend & run that wire to the white wire on the alternator? I got an aftermarket GM alternator with an internal regulator and same style connector, this should work right?

,,,actually you shorten the brown wire that goes to #4 on the voltage regulator,,,,cut it as it goes past the carburetor, and run it down to #1 on the alternator,,,,,,,hook #2 to the output of the alternator........

Got it. So basically it will run from the voltage regulator to the alternator.

yep,,,,,,,,instead of the wire coming from the idiot light going to the #4 terminal on the voltage regulator,   make it go to the #1 on the alternator,,,,,,,

So after I cut that brown wire, I connect the end that will continue on to the idiot light, leaving that #4 slot not connected to anything anymore, correct? Just wanna make sure I do it right. Thanks Don!

That old regulator uses up a lot of space,,,,,you can get rid of  it and all the wiring on it,,,,,,F and 2 just go to the F and R terminals on the old Alternator,,,,# 3 goes to the horn relay,,,,,,and you cut #4 and run it to the new alternator,,,,,you can get rid of all that if you want,,,,,I would run a new 10 gauge wire from the output up to the Horn Relay as well as another from the Horn Relay to the Battery  Cable on the starter solenoid with a 14 gauge fusible link to keep the van from burning up when the old wiring shorts out someday......
