So I've been stripping the paint off my tailgate expecting the worse, but it appears just to have been beat all to hell and back but not rusted. I'm in the process of fixing the damage and I got to thinking that the same gas tank sealer I used for the gas tank would work great for the tailgate. Treating and protecting the inside from rust. Am I going overboard or will it not work? Should I leave it alone? Anyone else tried this?

Re: Gas tank sealer and my tailgate.
just my 2 cents but i'd use either a rust stop product. or a rustolium paint any thing is beter than nothing. .If you used a tank liner it should have been a 3 stage system but i 'm only guessing it would work but cost a lot of money,

Re: Gas tank sealer and my tailgate.
Is there any type of access panel to get into the inside of it?

Re: Gas tank sealer and my tailgate.
it's open to the elements. I'm not nuts about cutting it open that's why I thought a gas tank sealer system would be perfect to protect it. If they weren't rare as chicken lips I probably would worry so much with it.

Re: Gas tank sealer and my tailgate.
I'd prob just take some por15 and dump it in and wiggle it around to be honest, I've never seen a tail gate on an econo so I can't give you the best advise on what exactly I would do. But if I can't get in there to clean out the inside I think I'd resort to just putting por15 inside and calling it good enough. And due to the rarity of the tailgate I would never suggest cutting it open unless it was real bad or you were going to make a new outer skin.

I think you would be a lot better using a rust converter product inside the gate instead of a tank liner. Tape off one end and pour some in and then tape off the other end so you can swish it around and once you have everything coated remove the tape and pour out the excess.

I'm with L&S on this one find some por15 just be sure that if you have left over you put it in a new can and make sure the lid is clean and has no paint on the rim. Or you will never get the can cap off again lol

You need a cavity wax, which is designed specifically for treating the inside of panels and cavities that you can't get to with paint.
