Anybody have advice for working out the steering on a 4x4 conversion on a second gen?
The front axle I have is from a 76 Chevy full size.

    Thanks in advance!

RIP The 70s Chevy 4x4 pick up uses a very similar steering set up as a Earley GM van you just may have to modify the bar that goes from the steering box to the left front wheel...............THE hydrolic steering will work also but is not Street legal (at least in Florida) on the road....cheers...

Get the rest of the '76 and just put the van on the truck chassis, thats what I'm doing!  Haha, just kidding it's been a long slow process and I think in hindsight the front axle swap would've been easier.  I'll put up pics of my steering once I figure it out though...

I have tried that route on an Econoline, will never do it again!  With everything that is available for suspension lifts, using that frame to get additional lift was just to much.  Old Dirty, been following your thread, will be watching your steering issues as you work them out.  you are gonna have a nice one for sure!

Rip, I'm also in the process of building a 68/108 4x4. I'm using the axels and transmission/transfer case out of a 78 swb p/u.  The vans steering arm is smaller than the trks steering arm. What I did for the steering was I left all the original steering components in place that came on the trk front axel. and I mated the two steering arms together. I left the knuckle and threaded coupler on the axel end and cut about 4 3/4" off of the van's steering arm. I split the threaded coupler opposite of where it had a split, stuck the vans arm in about three inches , clamped them together, made sure it was straight and then welded them together.
Next for me is front shocks, then brakes and the front will be done.
Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks Matt, that sounds easy enough and strong too. I get nervous about cutting/welding when it comes to the steering.
