    Post by Mad Jack Sat May 25, 2013 1:18 pm

    Hello,

    My name is Jack, I just wanted to post up and introduce myself. I've just purchased my first Vintage Van, 1964 Ford E100. I've been tinkering with old cars for years, but this is my first Van. I just think it's really cool looking and I couldn't resist it. It was born the year before me, and it reminded me of the Thames Vans we used to get in England where I'm originally from. It's been an AZ Van all of it's life which thankfully means there's not a spot of rust on it... and all in all she seems like a pretty honest old girl.

    I've been trying to decode the VIN but I'm not a 100% on it... The VIN is E14TH511212

    I'm thinking

    E14 = E100 Van
    T = 200 CID I6 ? (I'm not sure on this because Ford only list the 144 or 170 for the 1964 model year?)
    H = Assembled in Ohio
    511212 = production serial number

    Well I'm sure I'll be picking all of your brains for help and advice as my old girl and I start our journey...

    I'm looking forward to being part of the community Smile

    Welcome Jack,

    The T is for a 170. If you could post the whole data tag we could give a thorough decode. We keep a registry of vins. Although rare, 200's were instaled in some Econolines but it was a special order only. Ford liked to save the 200's for the Mustangs. We have 3 known to exist. All 66's I've actually seen and inspected one personally. Lots of unusual parts on it compared to standard 170 trucks.

    Welcome aboard Jack! We've got a few members from across the pond. Looks like you scored a really nice van without rust. You're way ahead of the game with that. Congrats!

    Speaking of members across the pond, when you've got time, check out this thread about a Thames restoration. This guy does some incredible metal work.

    Your doorplate data has been decoded here

    http://www.econolineid.com/vehicle.php?v=1680

    You have a 3/4 ton van, which means heavier springs than the base model, but not the 1 ton model.

    The T is a 170 engine, but many have been swapped out for a 200 over the years.

    The 3.50:1 rear axle ratio should be decent on gas.

    Here's my decode provided by Jay Long over at the Econosrus Yahoo group.

    E14 = Econoline van series
    T = 170 engine
    H = Lorain Ohio assembly plant
    511212 = March 1964 serial number (1964 model)
    090 = wheelbase (inches)
    M = Wimbledon White paint
    E144 = Econoline van model, "3/4 ton"
    1 = gray standard interior
    89 = van body style
    A = 3 speed transmission
    01 = 3.50:1 light duty axle (7-1/4 inch)
    4350 = "3/4 ton" GVW rating
    85 at 3600 = certified net HP at RPM
    71 = Los Angeles sales district

    The gray interior is a bit unusual on a non-fleet truck, but not unheard of.
    That was a 1964-only choice, most commonly seen on Bell System trucks (which
    this one is not).

    Awesome, thanks Duane... the guy I bought it from said it was a Bell truck but seemed like he was talking out of his rear end to try and make the sale...

    But now I now all about it..

    On the rear axle, the diff is leaking from the rear cover, I've seen new gaskets that say 9"... is that the outer case size and the 7-1/4 is the actual gear size, or does 7-1/4 refer to the outer case size?

    Thanks again Duane, you're a super star cheers

    Well, I'm no superstar buy I know a few. The 9" and 7 1/4" are two completly different rears. The 9" doesn't have a rear cover. The 7 1/4 does have a rear cover. The were common in falcons and six cylinder mustangs from the 60's. You can find a gasket using one of those for reference. I've seen several done with RTV alone. Just clean it up good and put a bead on the cover and bolt it back up. I prefer to use a gasket myself. I haven't had the best of luck with RTV.

    Jack The 9" or 7 1/4" denotes the size of the ring gear inside the rear end. It has absolutely no bearing on the outer case dimensions. If your rearend has a rear cover, like Econo said, its not an 8" or a 9" rearend.

    Everyone loves the grill, but I can't take any credit for it, it was on the van when I bought it Wink

    Hey Thunder, I bought the Van from a guy named Mitch in Cottonwood... I'm not sure how long he'd had it or where he got it from, so I guess it could be Glen's old van... Smile

    Thanks for the welcome Cool
