Post by mbasaraba Wed Mar 20, 2013 7:00 am

I have been looking at lot at these systems in the last few months. After selling my CNC Plasma I have been looking for something else to subsidize my habit of taking on projects.

Has anyone ever had parts done like this?

    Are they holding up?

How much did they charge and what piece did you have done?

I sent inquiries lately asking about coverage cost, wouldnt be very effective if it takes $200 worth of materials to do a bumper then have to charge someone $400 to do it to cover shipping and everything. I just been thinking how nice it would be to chrome mirrors, door handles, emblems, grills, etc and other smaller parts on our vans that are hard to find.

I had seen this video posted before but watching it again was really wow...

.I will have my daughter post my pics when I get home today. I just had my headlight grills done and marker light trim done. We have a guy in Illinois that just started doing 15 grand for the equipment. KDX auto painting.

I seen Joe like on some of KDX pictures on Facebook. I am curious how durable the finish is going to be. Do you like the way they look? I havent seen any parts like this up close. How much did they charge for those pieces?

I am not so much worried about the cost of setup if it was something there would be demand for. (Not saying just demand on vans, I have other car projects that I am working on.) There wouldnt be demand if it didnt hold up or looked like crap or cost way too much to do a part.

If it cost $100 to do a horn button with this method, a vanner would pay $20 for real chrome even if some kid somewhere was going to lose all his hair due to the process. LoL

Here's a good cheap way to try-before-you buy. I have purchased products from Alsa before with incredible results. Here is a link to there Chrome FX. http://www.alsacorp.com/products/chromefx/ I haven't tried this stuff yet, but I have their Killer Chrome kit in my possession. I'm just waiting for the right item to try it on. Here is a link for it. http://www.alsacorp.com/products/killercans/kc/killerchrome.htm

They offer that kit for $300. I might try that and see how it goes. Can always get a big kit later. Thanks for the info, going to call them when I leave work!

I called and talked to Gary at Chrome FX on my way home from work today. They offer a "Test Kit" for $300. In this kit is EVERYTHING needed to try the product to cover up to 10 sqft of area. He told me he uses this on demos in the show room and it is way easier for small parts than the bit kits.

As soon as I got home I ran in and replied to my email from him with an order form and ordered the kit.

Here is what I would like to do, Is there anyone that has a SMALL part they would like chromed?

    Horn Button

    1st Gen Dash Vents

    Glove Box Door

    Door Handles

    Ash Tray Door

Sheet metal piece between steering wheel and dash

    ETC

    Give me some ideas!

I am going to do my door handles as soon as it gets here. What sucks is I dont have ANY emblems on my van, no side badges, no nose bow tie, no original steering wheel, etc. I would love to try the side badges and a bow tie. Anyone got some that are in bad shape they would like to see redone? Plastic dash vents?

I think the glove box door for the Ford guys that ordered my gauge bezel is going to be a good ticket also! Any takers?

If they are SEVERELY pitted I would like to hold off on 3D objects till I get a grasp of the system. I will have to prep this stuff just like if it was going to be painted. If you are ok with no having them for a month I am good to try it. I am going to do a few flat pieces first.

I should note that I did NOT order any candy pigments so all of these will be straight chrome. If I decide to buy a system I will look at ordering pigments at that time.

As can be expected I have had an OVER WHELMING response to this.

I have a bunch of parts headed this way to try out on.

I wanted to make sure I made it clear that this is just a TEST run, I dont know how to do this yet and so these pieces that others have offered might not be what others expect them to be.

I am going to tweak a system then I will offer the actual SERVICE for people that want parts done.

I will keep the thread updated to how it all goes and how the parts are looking.

Getting closer to starting. I bought the materials to build myself a 8x8 clean room, ran my air plumbing and picked up 2 new air dryers.

Also picked up this touch up gun.

    Paint Gun

Should be ready to start as soon as the materials get here next week! Getting very excited to see how this all turns out!

I still need to make some kind of "Sink" that will catch and drain away the liquid from the process. Thinking I might just make one with sheets of aluminum that I have and a shower drain in the bottom. Doesnt have to be anything fancy.

Another step closer. I got the "Clean/Spray" Room framed and electric ran. Got the air lines and dryer installed with the pressure regulator.

I put this in the unfinished side of my shop since I am really tight on space on the other side with working on the van and everything. I was short 2 studs so need to get those and put those up and put the door on.

Still need to build a "Spray Sink" but getting there. Then it is put down the concrete and sheet rock! Woo!

Spray guns delivered yesterday, components to do the chroming to be delivered today. I got a glove box door prepped and ready to shoot.

I had good response from people wanting to send stuff but havent seen anything delivered yet. Would like to do 3-5 parts this weekend at one time so I dont have to clean and remix solutions. The base coat has to cure for 24 hours before I can chrome the parts.

Has anyone that said they would send parts sent them yet?
