painted the old econoline... Empty painted the old econoline...

Post by Army of Six Tue Mar 12, 2013 8:08 pm

wifey bought me a devilbiss paint gun for xmas. i decided to try and paint the van. I did a test spray of the color on a metal drum and it went on great. It is a single stage metallic paint and i was worried about the metallics mottling and sagging but like i said it went on great. turns out it gave me a false sense of security lol.

so basically its an ok first paint job. im not going to win any awards for best paint but it is my daily driver so it will be battling it out with all the idiots in the parking lots. i figured out that my air compressor doesnt supply enough CFM to feed the HVLP spray gun. so it starts off great, perfect spray pattern but after a couple of minutes the air pressure drops and the spray pattern begins to suffer. i am in the process of re painting some of the crappier panels. some of you sharper eyes will notice that there are no F O R D emblems. i pulled them and bought some good ole Ford blue oval emblems. one will go in the front centered in the grill and one will be placed in the lower right corner of the rear door. here is a link to some pics. i ll post more later.

Looks good from what I can see! Like ya say , if your duking it out with shopping carts at walmart single stage isn't a bad way to go. Thats what I use and already have a couple stray door dings and such.

thanks guys... i will post more pics. its still in the garage..i mean paint booth Wink

i went with single stage because its basically costs half as much and is half the work. i will probably go base coat clear coat with my old pontiac as it is mostly a weekend cruiser.

thanks guys. here is a link to the paint..

now if i can just get it running well i could take it for a cruise. the number 2 cylinder has a miss. did a compression test and all cylinders were good at approx 200psi. replaced that fuel injector, the coil and the ignition module to no avail.

its a single stage....if the body was perfect i think i would do a 2 stage...dump a bunch of clear on it and wetsand and buff it out to perfection. but if i went through all that trouble you would be reading about me in the paper when i beat the crap out of the person who dinged it at the 7-11 parking lot lol

Looks like it flowed out very well! Nice work!
Injector/coil? Do you have a late model engine in that?
200 PSI is pretty high for compression too, but so long as they are even, it may be a gauge that is off...

    thank you.

yes, its a 1990 4.3L chevy v6...and yes the gauge is a little messed up. it zeros out at like 25psi. it was built as a low compression motor (turbocharged) but all i look for is that they are uniform and they all were give or take 5 pounds. i also swapped out the plug wire which didnt help either
