Cragar Wheels For My '68 A100 Empty Cragar Wheels For My '68 A100

Post by Guest Tue Feb 05, 2013 5:08 pm

I recently rescued a '68 A100 Window Van. It desperately needs new wheels and tires as what it has now are all mismatched and the tires are rotted. Perhaps this is common knowledge on here, and I did use the search function, but I'm just at a loss as to what size / type wheels I need.

I would like to buy some Cragar wheels, ideally with the 61614's up front and the 61616's in the rear. Looking around in various posts and forums it seems that these will fit, but before dropping all that cash I want to be 100% sure.

    Cragar 61614
    08/61 Series Super Sport Wheel
    Size: 14'' x 6''
    Bolt Circle: 5 x 4-1/2", 4-3/4", 5"
    Rear Spacing: 3-3/8''
    Offset: -3mm

    Cragar 61616
    08/61 Series Super Sport Wheel
    Size: 14'' x 6''
    Bolt Circle: 5 x 4-1/2", 4-3/4", 5"
    Rear Spacing: 2''
    Reversed Offset: -38mm

I'm pulling the information and pricing from here:
    http://www.jegs.com/p/Cragar/Cragar-08-61-Series-S-S-Super-Sport-Wheels/755662/10002/-1

Any help on this would be great. Do I need anything else like lug nuts, etc?

    Sorry for the noob post.

The front should fit no problem. The rears should too, it's only an inch out from neutral (4" instead of 3").
Provided you have a fairly normal tire on that 6 inch rim.
there are many vans with 8 inch rims which also have 4" out from the hub with neutral offset.

Well I'm going to have to get new tires too so I guess I need to figure out what fits these wheels.

No, I live NW Austin. It's been at Atomic Garage in Round Rock for a week and I finally get it back tomorrow. This is me (prior to their body work):

Is there any kind of van scene here in ATX? I'm in an MC and that is pretty much my life so anything in the CC world is foreign to me at this point (outside of Lonestar Round Up)

Got a '67. Ran some old mags for 30 years that fit well – 15 x 6.75, 5 x 4.5 bolt circle, with 3-3/8 rear spacing (to outside of the lip), and 4-3/8 front spacing (outside of lip). Now running 15 x 7 with 4.25 rear spacing and 3.75 front spacing. Soon to change to 15 x 7 with 4" rear/front spacing. I wrote a note to myself way back saying that the rear spacing should be no greater than 4.5", but that might not apply to low profile tires.

Use to have wider tires in the rear but can't remember what that size was – I'm sure someone else here can help with the max size.

I run the same size all around now and the largest I'm comfortable with that lets me keep the tightest steering radius is 215/75 15. Tire shop did their usual huckster thing once and talked me into wider, spendier ones but they rubbed up front – so they ended up doing twice the labor by changing them out for the ones I originally asked for. Pity.

I know some folks here run wider tires and at least one member has 235/70(?) 15s, but I don't know what their back and front spacing is.

It seems most people are running 15's over 14's. Perhaps I should go with these then:

    08/61 Series Super Sport Wheel
    Size: 15'' x 7''
    Bolt Circle: 5 x 4-1/2" 4-3/4", 5"
    Rear Spacing: 4-1/8''
    Offset: 3mm

    Rear Spacing: 2-1/4''
    Reversed Offset: -44mm

Thank you Mr Gothboy. My original a108 rims are 15 x 5.5 with 4-3/32" rear spacing.

I might be concerned about the shallow rear spacing, leaving too much front spacing which might cause the front to rub on turns like Gothboy noted. His 235/75s rub so maybe the shallow rear spacing will cause even 215/75s to rub.

I run 14's and would recommend that you run 15's instead. 14" tires are getting hard to find (read: more expensive) and 225/70/14 Coopers are about the biggest white letter you can get unless you start buying Mickey Thompson Indy Profiles which are really expensive.

15" rims will give you a much better option on rubber and probably fewer rpms going down the road than 14's as well. On a side note, check Summit racing for rims too, they have pretty good pricing and do carry thier own "summit" brand which looks pretty good.

I have a pair of 15x7 keystones with the 2" backspacing. You wouldn't want them on the front for the rubbing on turns reason. They would give you that wide look on the back tho.

NOTE: I also picked up a couple 15 x 5.5 rims from the boneyard that were from that era that have a 3-3/4" back spacing.

I've got 215/65-15 Cooper Cobra's on 15x6 Keystones up front and 255/60-15 on 15x8 on the rear of my 67 panel, no chassis mods. It has a nice stance with no rubbing at all. I might go with a slightly taller tire on the front next go round, not sure Smile
