Just a friendly REMINDER!!= as we go into our New year of building engines & such=Please all =REMEMBER= if we are using the old style solid & hydrualic cams & Lifetrs setups- do remember to use the =ZINC oil additive s with every oil changes!! The newer roller camed engines dont need it. Also =available are some "Eacing" type oils that have the additive in it!! That stuff will save us all a lot of head Aches!1 Happy vannin!!

Re: Engines & oil!!
ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate) is what to look for.

Re: Engines & oil!!
Didn't know about this just did an oil change with regular oil on my 65 econoline with a 200ci.
Will my engine have a hydraulic cam? I thought it was just a regular cam.
Also does anyone know of any oil at local part stores (autozone, oreilly) have any oil with zinc in it.
EDIT: I just read in the article Risloine makes a additive for the oil with Zinc in it, I may just get some of that.

I bought some eastwood zinc additive and buy the vr1 valvoline when ever somebody runs it on special. I am stocking up, as I figure the gov't will ban it all together at some point.

Re: Engines & oil!!
Yeah that is what I will do next time, but my oil change was done about2 weeks ago so an additive would be better for me. Now I just have to find it.....

Re: Engines & oil!!
For more than you ever want to know about oils and additives,
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
I can suggest Shell Rotella T which is for diesels that have some pretty darn high pressure situations. They also didn't have converters that plugged like cars until recently. This is also going away, so if you have a concern about this stuff, go to bob's site and get edu-ma-cated!

Re: Engines & oil!!
"Fuel-saving" oils are required to reduce the lead content. The lead content has been going down for years. Non-fuel-saving oils, like racing oils, some synthetics, and 10W-40 and thicker oils can have a high lead content.
If your engine is more than 10 years old, then you probably need lead in your oil.
Most oil with lead is more expensive. This keeps normal folks from using it and killing their catalytic converter.
Weigh the cost of leaded oil with cheap oil and a separate lead additive.
Look for a two-letter code on the oil that starts with S. SM and SN are the current codes. The SM has very little lead. I think the SN has none. Look for a code with a second letter closer to the beginning of the alphabet. Our vans came with SB oil. SC oil came out in 1967. The SJ oil has half the lead of our original SB. Thus SJ is OK, but anything before SJ, like SH, is best.
Don't stock up on leaded oil. The shelf life of oil is 3-4 years.
And on a related note, if you have not rebuilt your head since 1975, then you need lead in your gas too. Find an additive to add to your gas.

Re: Engines & oil!!
If y'all do a goggle search you will find tons of info on this subject. I have always used a bottle of STP since I started driving and have never had a problem. Yes, blue bottle STP contains ZDDP.
