Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Well,,,,,,the whole story starts where the positive battery cable connects to the starter solenoid,,,,,another wire, the main feed wire, hauls the juice to the rest of the truck from there,,,,, it goes to the horn relay where all the circuits grab some of that juice and the alternator jumps in to help out,,,,,so this circuit has no fuse,,,,,its a hot wire,,,,,and when, not if, the wire rubs on a clip or something, the whole battery current wants to jump out through it,,,,,,and that usually means fire,,,,,,so,,,,,like ALL the newer vehicles have,,,,,we need a fusible link in the system,,,,something that melts when too much battery current comes all of a sudden rushing through it,,,,and disconnects the battery from the circuit,,,,,so cut the feed wire off the terminal on the starter solenoid where it meets the positive battery cable and slip a 14 gauge fusible on that terminal and connect it to the feed wire....

Yesterday, after reading this post, I realized that I never added mine, took heed of the warning and added mine!donivan65 wrote:Well,,,,,,the whole story starts where the positive battery cable connects to the starter solenoid,,,,,another wire, the main feed wire, hauls the juice to the rest of the truck from there,,,,, it goes to the horn relay where all the circuits grab some of that juice and the alternator jumps in to help out,,,,,so this circuit has no fuse,,,,,its a hot wire,,,,,and when, not if, the wire rubs on a clip or something, the whole battery current wants to jump out through it,,,,,,and that usually means fire,,,,,,so,,,,,like ALL the newer vehicles have,,,,,we need a fusible link in the system,,,,something that melts when too much battery current comes all of a sudden rushing through it,,,,and disconnects the battery from the circuit,,,,,so cut the feed wire off the terminal on the starter solenoid where it meets the positive battery cable and slip a 14 gauge fusible on that terminal and connect it to the feed wire....

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Bought some clear coat from the auto body supply store and applied it and look what happened...G-Man wrote:Stop at a local auto paint store, they may have the color or clear in a can that won't cost to much. There them what you're doing and you want to do it once.
Brought the wheel down to the place where I bought the clear coat and spoke with the guy. He told me that it looked like I had applied too much of the product too fast in the areas that were cracking (see above) and that it was recommended that I either apply the clear coat a few minutes after applying the paint, so the chemicals will like each other or wait a full 48 hours after applying the paint, so it will completely cure.
So, for the purposes of experimentation and this site, I am going to try both. I sanded down the snakeskin and repainted the "blue wheel" as Don puts it, waited about 10 minutes and sprayed one side of the wheel with clear coat and I will let the other side of the wheel dry for 48 hours and spray it with the clear coat. I am assuming that if I use several light coats, either drying method will work...more photos to come.

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
They don't want you to keep those old vans around forever,,,,,they got to make sure you buy the new ones when they come out,,,,,,,however,,,,,,its the same story,,,,all the circuits on a vehicle need some of that juice on the end of the positive battery cable,,,,,so on a Ford, you find that cable,,,,,hooked to to the starter relay,,,,,there probably are 2 smaller wires hooked to it,,,,one is from the voltage regulator,,,,,the other goes to the horn relay/ignition switch/headlight switch/fuse box/and cigarette lighter....if there is, or was, a fusible link on either of the 2 wires, it would be bolted to that terminal on the starter relay that the positive battery cable hooks to,,,,, but see what you got,,,,lots of stuff happens in 50 years when you have to---vanny wrote:Don, can you tell us Ford guys if this also applies to 1st Gen Econo's?

You tell em Bill! I'm surprised they didn't mention F'ed Over Rebuilt Dodge! Had to get the Mopar Guys involved too!
All kidding aside, thanks for the info Don. If my wife ever runs out of projects for me, I might actually get to do some work on the van!
