Auto Transmission Upgrade Empty Auto Transmission Upgrade

Post by ScottyJones Tue Aug 14, 2012 2:25 pm

Once I get my new motor all squared away, I want to start looking into upgrading my transmission. Right now it has a powerglide, but I would like to get something with an overdrive that cruises a little better on the freeway. Would the 2004R be a good swap? I believe I have a 3.36 rear end.

How involved would the swap be? Im guessing I will have to make a cross member, but will all my shift linkage from the powerglide transfer over?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hey scotty =look in the archives - some use that tranny & some the 700R4 unit . Im building a 700 for my chev. Just need the tuff stuff inside when u do it. thats usually a 24-26 % rpm reduction . at od . Im running 3:73 = ive also got a car im doing with a 4:11 ratio. u should be fine on highways with that yet no lower in rear ratios .

Fairly straightforward, your powerslide shifter will work, but you may need to modify it if you want to manually select 1st or 2nd gear.

    I installed a 200-4r in mine..

The Bell-housing is going to hit the body. You will either need to cut the body, or lower the engine about an inch.

Twinpilot is right, check the archives, there's a lot about this that has been done and posted.

Just swaped a 700r4 out for a 2004r and love it! 1600 RPM at 60 mph with 3:40 rear gears. Had to refab trans mount as the 200 mount is further back. The 700r4 has a lower 1st gear and a lower over drive ratio. Droped rpm about 400 at 60 mph. Did this because the 700 had been built for racing and would chirp tires every time shifting in to second gear. ( Wife shot that down real quick. )
Sorry but sold the 700 for more than I paid for it.

Thanks for all the info, I am keeping an eye out for a good deal on one now. Seems like it will be fairly straight forward.

Should be pretty easy to fab up some 1" lowering blocks for the motor. I saw the ones VanAgain made for his with aluminum blocks. Im also diggin Billski's crossmember design…seems like that would be the simplest route…

I know there's been a lot of discussion about the transmission crossmembers, but those of you with 2004r's in a 1st gen, what are you guys running for cross members?

    Thanks!!

Called this guy today and it was about what I expected. Total bait and switch. He doesn't actually have the transmission, but he's "expecting one in soon". He then quoted me 900-1000 bucks if I didn't have a core to bring him.

    I'll keep lookin!
