The ends on the front axle remind me of a Toyota axle.

That thing's tough!
Could that be some old NAPCO conversion stuff somebody put on a van? Looks like Napco axles... although I have not ever seen a front pumpkin cover like that before!? Do a google search and look at all the early Napco stuff and you'll see what I mean.
Check on the axle tubes and also on the transfer case for anything that says Napco. If it is napco stuff, you will find "napco" cast into the front of the axle tube. Napco did 4x4 conversions on many chevy trucks in the 50's and 60's, but I have never seen one on a van.

The shifters for the 4x4 come out the floor just to the right of the seat. My dad thinks it's early Napco, the front axles and rims sure look like that Jeep FC. I'll look for Napco in the cast when I go by again.
