Post by Guest Thu May 31, 2012 4:27 pm

    i have what i think is a 66 170 with a 3 speed, and bought what i think is a 66 200 from an automatic mustang

does anyone know if the 170 manual flywheel and clutch will work on the 200

The crank ends are identical as is the bell housing bolt
pattern if the 200 is the "dual bolt pattern" case. What
you need to check is the pilot bearing in the end of the
crank. The trans input shaft end snout inserts into this
    bearing. There are two sizes.

thanks that would be good news, i talked with classic inlines today and they thought there were two different cranks in the 200 that had different bolt patterns. one for a 8.5 inch clutch and one for a 9 inch clutch

Never seen that. The 144, 170 and 200 all share the same
crank bolt pattern (and they all share the same block, just
bored and stroked larger.) The 250 (and 300) has the small
    block V8 bolt pattern.

Be warned that the six bolts look to be in a perfect pattern,
symmetric. But two of them are off slightly.

This is done on purpose so you can only put the flywheel on
    one way.

You might have to try fitting the flywheel on several times
    before it goes into place...

Keep the flywheel and clutch plate/disc the
same as what you got. Replace with the same
as you had in the 170.

Check that your starter is located in the same
    basic position as the 170.

If the starter is "low" that 200 is not useful
to you, BUT it's worth some money...
(your 170 has a "high" starter, relative to the
    oil pan-to-block line.)

thanks for the reply, i was wondering after looking over my two motors about the starters, you say that if the starter is low on my 200 it is not useful to me, but it looks like to me the starter mounts to he bell housing so wouldnt it be in the same hi position as on the 170

Yes, the low starter will not accept your 3 speed transmission.

Here is an example of a low starter:
170 manual flywheel and clutch work on 200? 12112

Notice the starter is BELOW the line of the Oil Pan and Block.

Most likely, your starters are both above the Oil Pan line. (High Starter)

Note: the 200 with a low starter is very rare. It is worth a lot
of money. It will not take the transmissions found in stock
Econolines. However, it has the bell housing bolt pattern of
the small block Ford V8. This means you can have a straight six
200 with a 5-speed overdrive transmission like the T-5, great
performance and great mileage. You can also use an AOD/AODE
    overdrive automatic.

    thanks
looks like the starter does mount to the bellhousing but there looks to be a cutout in the block for it, ill have to look closer at my block
