Engine fell ! Empty Engine fell !

Post by Rayallen Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:37 am

Hey guys, this is a 1st for me. I've never removed or worked on a engine outside of its bay.

My buddy and I put the 1965 200ci motor I bought on a engine stand yesterday. Well heres how it went. I had the motor on a cart so that it was easier to roll around. My buddy moved the cart to get it into position for the engine hoist. When he moved the cart the motor fell on its side onto the concrete. Landed on the carb and alternator which took most of the fall. The carb mouth is bent and the alt has some scratches. No other damage seen at all. Damn thing is heavy.

With all that said, the motor should be fine right? it only fell around 6" on its side. Ive heard of them falling a few feet off a engine stand and being just fine. When I saw it fall my balls were in my throat. Shocked Anything I should look for specifically or need to worry about?

carbs likely toast?? yet see how bad it is - turn the alt pulley to see if anythings bent & wont rotate freely? Likely engine is ok

Engine blocks are pretty tough so it should be alright. You will probaly have to replace the carb & check the alternator mount & make sure it is not bent & maybe it will be ok. It might smoke a little when you crank it up for the first time if it had any oil in it but it will eventually quit smoking.

Well its pretty scarey to watch happen isnt it? In my younger days we did some major boo boo drops in trying to rush things and none had internal damage.
