Re: G Van rear end Question??
I would say the easiest way to change a 10 bolt to a 12 bolt is just drill a couple of extra holes, but that is just me... HAPPY MONDAY!!!!

Re: G Van rear end Question??
,,,,,,I take it that you don't want a van rear end and have to put up with the lower speed and increased noise, RPM and fuel consumption that those Van 12 bolt 3:73 and 4:11 ratios have in them,,,,,,

rear end
Hey doni - not really as i like the 3.73 posi I have in the van. I was just curious as to a bolt in 12 bolt rear That might alos have disc brakes from the factory.? Ive been out of the mainstream of whats been available for some years now with the later van world. Im also planning on towing some things with the van in future.

Re: G Van rear end Question??
You could probaly put a rear end out of a 79-81 trans am with disk brakes in a 2nd gen but you might have to have it shortened.

Re: G Van rear end Question??
You won;t find anything that just bolts in except for a 2nd gen 12 bolt. everything else will need the pads cut off and new welded at the right spring locations. 79 and up ten bolts are just as strong or stronger then ealier twelve bolt rear ends but alot lighter.
The big challenge is finding the right width and pinion center.
I have 1980 trans am ten bolt and I am not happy to realise the pinion is 1" off center from the van engine/trams line. I am very seriously contemplating going back to an original 10 bolt for just that reaon.

Re: G Van rear end Question??
There used to be a machinist in my town that could cut down the rear ends and could of most defiantly recentered the center pension gear housing & made it look factory. He built high dollar sand rails with every thing from VW running gears to 4x4 ford,Chevy & Toyota running gears. It can be done but at a cost....

Re: G Van rear end Question??
Our van rear ends are made so that the pinion and driveshaft are 1" off center,,,,,,moving the pinion over to the center will result in needing one axle 1" longer and the other one 1" shorter,,,,so that adds more complications,,,,,,
