Sheet metal gauge? Empty Sheet metal gauge?

Post by Hellfish Thu Feb 02, 2012 10:26 am

Does anyone know what gauge was used on the rear fenderwells?

Mine are shot about 1-2" all the way around and I'm debating fixing them or replacing them with fenderwells from Summit. The stock ones seem really thin (much thinner than the 18ga used on the floors), but Summit's wells are 24ga, which seems like it would be even thinner. I don't want these things easily dented when I haul parts, plus my rear seats are bolted to them, and my kids will eventually sit there.

    [i]likely was 14 ga - 10 ga -1/8 inch thickness - usually was around 14-16 gauge metal.

There's no way it's that thick. I'd believe 18, but whittled down by rust, but it's much flimsier and thinner than the floor pieces and they're 18-19ga.

I used 24 gauge to patch some cancer in the sidewalls of my '64. The original metal measured .020 in= 24 gauge. I haven't measured but the wheel wells seem thicker, maybe in the 18-22 guage range. The floor is also thicker.
