noise similar to bad shock
noticed a 'thunk' noise coming from drivers front wheel area. sounds like bad shock but they are new and there is no play with weight removed, plus ride is still good. i checked all around are and all is tight except some play in king pin. there was a little play there a couple monthes ago but has tripled since then. could this make the constant thunk noise as i hit bumps? is it safe? what else could make the noise?

Re: noise similar to bad shock
Check your brake parts too, anything loose could be clunking over bumps.

Re: noise similar to bad shock
no sway bar, caliper is tight but didnt remove wheel to check ? did look at leafs, all looked good and plastic pads between leafs still there. will pull wheel and then remove shock. when i jump on it, it clunks just as front end lightens, when i let off, it clunks again as front end drops. had a buddy stand neer van while i did this and he confirmed drivers front wheel area.

Re: noise similar to bad shock
After you pull that shock off and see if the noise goes away,,,,,start looking at the bushings in the springs and shackles,,,see if the bolt in the front perch is loose or the hole is enlarged,,,,

good point digz. i had cut and rewelded the mount at crossmember, side closest to wheel. i remember having trouble with it, couldnt clean properly, or couldnt reach at right angle. dont remember but i do remember i wasnt pleased with weld.

Re: noise similar to bad shock
You cant see the cartridge in the front spring,,,,take a hydraulic jack put it on the top of the front spring and jack up the frame a little,,,watch the bushing see if it is loose as you let it down,,,,put a bar in there see if the bushing moves,,,,jack up the frame,,,take the pressure off the spring,,,,see if there is play in the bushings,,,,

Sounds like a Front Spring bushing. My Sportvan did the same thing when I first got it.

Re: noise similar to bad shock
well i found 2 things today. i used a head bolt on the bottom of shock. it is smaller diamater in the center and shock moved enough to make clunk. after replacing that, i used a pry bar to lift and drop spindle at king pin. it moved up and down slightly and made a similar sound. i greased them up and sound went away. no noise on the way home. i think the shock was making the noise but i need new kingpins either way.

Re: noise similar to bad shock
You take the steering knuckle off, then the 2 dust caps, remove the pin and it falls out on your toe,,,,,,and if that don't happen, it goes downhill from there,,,,try and tap the kingpin shaft down,,,,try to press it down with a clamp,,,,heat it up with a torch,,,,,but that shaft needs to come out for you to remove the spindle and then remove and replace the kingpin bushings,,,,,
