look for the the numbers near the bottom of the engine by the exhaust manifold/exhaust pipe connection. Then go to classicmustang.com/decoding if it is a ford it will tell you the model/size of the engine

hey, i finally found those numbers, and unfortunately this decoding link is not working.

If its a stock type early econo tranny then it wont have a crossmember. It will hang from a loop attached to the floor area. If it is a stick (original for a 62) then see if it has an access plate on top(top loader,synchronized),if no plate then its a non synchro first gear,original probably but not desireable. Auto trannys werent available til 64.
