found this number 3877178 with the letters GM below the numbers . behind the distributer..does it describe the engine size ?? it was stamped on the motor.

It could be a 230 1966-1970 or a 250 1966-1979. The only way to know for sure is by the crank casting number. If the crank has a the casting number 3777178 it is a 230 if the casting number on the crank is a 3962084 it is a 250...you could pull the valve cover if the head casting number is 3872708 it is a 230. If it is 6259693 it is a 250..

there is an easier way to identify what engine you have.
there is a pad next to the distributor that has some
numbers and letters stamped on this pad, they are production codes and will tell you what year and size
of your engine and also where you motor was built.
get this number and get on a chevy engine id site and
it will tell you what your engine started life as.
230/250 same block, crankshaft has different stroke.
