65 gas tank compatabilty

just buying this van , not being a mechanic ,the seller has convinced me the periodic puffs of black smoke is from crap in gas tank (also because he showed me where he changed filter in carb . that almost clogged up ,repleced then cleared up for a while). sooo, after realizing there is not a massed producedv aftermarket tank w/out being priced out of this world .2 choices kind of affordable ideas think i have:
1. very solid radiator shop in town (ropples rad.) has a patented service that blasts/cleans out and puts a coat ,inside & outside if wanted coated w/ something that is garunteed not to come up.150.00--up to 350 .00 or
2. has anyone checked measuements ,to know if there is another car tank you can use that will strap on van .?
any help appreciated.

so far no one has found a tank from another make thats a direct replacement. I had a radiator shop do mine

just dropped my 65 g10 gas tank off to get their renu treatment . i was quoted 325.00--350.00, thats compltely repairing vent tube broken weld ,seal up 2 holes that had a screw threaded in it & epoxied up , then open up tank to blast it inside and out ,then coat both w lifetime coating not to come up (it looks and feels like thick rubber.they even put a metal tag on tank ,no mater who had it done if you have one and it has any issues ,that tag will be a free ticket to repair it. knowing that there are no mass produced 65 van tanks made ,and the best i came up w/ on custom built was 500.00 .also i was told the closest shop from lou., ky ,that garentees this type work is probaly in mich. below is a part of their website info ;

wow have the prices on diping a tank went that hi ? i did my 1969 in 04 it cost me 80.00

Ya that sounds a little extreem, even for the over priced area I live in.

I put a brand new 1988 tank and sender with modifications to make it fit into my 65 and painted including custom made Stainles steel straps for about $350

The straps are custom made to length by "Got a Van Dan"
