van jerks in 1st gear Empty van jerks in 1st gear

Post by Rayallen Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:34 pm

Guys when I put my van into 1st gear and proceed forward the van jerks back and forth like a bucking bull. It does not do it all the time and never in 2nd or 3rd. Uusally only when I come to a complete stop and move into 1st again. A lot of times when im making a turn.

Any ideas what this could be?

Probably need to replace clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. That's what my 170 did until it let go completely!

Thanks Carl, my neighbor said the exact same thing. Lets add that onto things to do... The list continues to grow. Guess its to be expected from a 47yr old vehicle.

Just think of all the fun you're having though! Smile On the bright side, once you get to drive it regularly, all this will be forgotten!

I told my wife when I bought it I would have to replace most of everything one by one. At least I told her the truth Smile

    Probably your clutch.

Another possibility could be the rear main seal leaking oil onto the clutch, or perhaps someone didn't use thread sealant on the flywheel bolts.

Im looking at RockAuto right now.

I just need to figure out what motor to buy the parts for. My 64 van has a 65 motor in it and Im not sure from what kind of car failane, falcon etc.. I guess if I look under econoline any thing for a 170ci motor would match up because they do not have a 200ci listed as a motor for the econoline for any year.

Need to figure out what size clutch I have 8 1/2, 9 or 10"

Yes =falcon & mustang are same applications - sometimes early econos are not listed for clutches
