My third gear just started slipping out when i release the clutch and making funky noises. First and second are totally fine. Anyone dealt with this before? I have yet to mess with one of these 3sp trannys.

Re: 3rd gear slipping
Is it just popping out or is the clutch slipping. If its popping out maybe adjust it or maybe the sycro is bad.

trannys problems??
check the shifter (column) mecanism- maybe worn-not engaging all the way. or= see if the shifter forks are worn - they will be -yet look @ 3rd gear fork sepecially close??? They are very simple trannys to build. If syncros - id think it would take some time to engage 3rd gear.or wouldnt go in at all. remember - there is usually on a 3 speed tranny - only 2 shift levers= 1 & 3 rd & 2nd & reverse.

Re: 3rd gear slipping
Interesting, now the trans is stuck in reverse and wont shift out or move.

Re: 3rd gear slipping
Had em do this before - disconnect the linkage @ tranny & repair the shifter bushings & look @ likkages - its from wear & sloppyness in shifter mechanism

Re: 3rd gear slipping
Tranny has detents, so if sloppy shifter has left it in a gear, the tranny will lock up and not shift. Loosen the adjustment nuts, so the rods will slide in them, put a 1/4" screw driver into the adjustment hole in the aluminum steering column base and down into both of the shifters matching adjustment holes, make sure the trans shifters are in neutral, (both will shift and back to neutral),, re tighten the adjustment nuts, and it should shift okay. If your column needs rebuilding, it may take you having to fudge it a little, by pushing up on second gear to make up for the slop in your column, and you should be okay... careful if it pops out of gear as you are, as it can munch a gear...when it pops out under a load..vic

Re: 3rd gear slipping
Problem solved! I made some copper bushings and put them over the linkage adjusting pieces on the trans and it took all the slop out. Its amazing how nice it shifts now.
