I have a question about the wheel bearing seals in my 1961 Econo Pickup. They look like the
originals but I've never seen an oil slinger lip like this:

The seals the guy at NAPA (whom I have known for many years and pretty much trust) wanted to sell me
look more like regular seals, with no metal lip. I passed on the idea until I did more research and
wanted to tap the braintrust on our forum before continuing.

What has been your experience? Do you have "regular" seals and no problems. Are these "oil slinger" seals
worth carefully removing and re-using? Can I still get these rope type seals?

Please chime in, and entertain my dilemma.

    Best Regards,
    George

I bought new seals. \Mine have the lip like yours, but the lip isn't steel, just rubber material. I think my old ones were steel. No problems as of yet. And if you're taking it out, replace it. Do it once, right? I think I paid about $30 a piece for my seals. Mine is a '65. toad

    Hi Toad,

thanks for that info, it's what I needed to hear. I decided
not to get the ones from my local shop they were flat looking seals.
I just ordered the original-looking metal ones from MAC's even
though they were twice the cost at 17 bucks apiece.

The only reason I want to replace the seals is so that I can pop them
and clean and re-pack the bearings. I think the lip on those seals is
important since the insides of my original drums are pretty clean.

The bearings so far look pretty good, just kind of dirty, which is
proving to me that my pickup had low miles, most of which was on
a farm like the previous owner claimed...

    Thanks again,
    George

I dont think that slinger should matter, for the econos around here they will list a rubber style and a leather (original) style but they don't have the "slinger"...if the seal is holding it shouldn't need that steel sleeve?
