As some might already know, I just discovered I have a 700R4 trans from '92 GM Safari with a shift kit in it.. I need to no how I can hook this up with out using the computer from this van. It has a computer controlled lock up converter in it, and of course 3 speed with overdrive (my rebuilt 9" has 4:11's). Can this be manually switched on using a toggle switch to lock and unlock or do I need the computer to do this? I called the drive shaft builder to HAAAAAALT construction till I figure out what to do. I was going to put in the 350/350 that I have in my 67,until I could find a trans like this. But was looking for an '86 style with lever on it for carb linkage to unlock the converter and so on. now not sure what to do here. Any help on this matter would be great. I have use of the shop for the next few days and now would be the time to do this trade.

Re: HELP...700R4
Thanks G-Man. Going to see him Monday morning to see what I need to do and if it's worth all the frustration. Will also ask if putting a lock up in this TH350 that I have already attached to the motor will work to keep RPMs down with those same 4:11 gears. Might have to change rear end gears, but I'd rather not.

Re: HELP...700R4
Not sure what ya got but if its like this . this setup might work. pressure switch in the 4th gear(OD) test port.
A vacumn switch which acts as a kickdown.
these go in a circuit to I believe the inner forward wire on a square looking plug on the drivers side. The trannys vary on wiring internally so it may be different. mine is an 83 and this system works, but I also think I need to tweak it some more either at the TVC or possibly install a speed sensor that I saw posted earlier. The 350TH I dont think you will ever gain lower RPMS messin with that. Oh I just reread ,, ya the 92 trans wont work like this. I saw the 86 part...... duh

Re: HELP...700R4
What year is your trans?
All it is is a two wire solinoid that controls the lock up.
all the computer does is open or close the circuit by grounding and ungrounding the soliniod, turnign the TCC on or off like a glorified automatic togle switch..
Yes you can use a togle switch but its easy to make it automatic without a computer.
In these transmisions the lock up wiring inside the pan came in many different configurations. Some with temp switches, some with third gear switches . Some used normally open oil preasure switches and some used normally closed switches but all that 47 different ways they came is irrelivent to you.
there is several kits you can buy but they are not all the same and ussualy make a simple thing more confusing.
I will try to explane the simplicity of what you can have .
10 amp fused power goes through an adjustable manifold vacuum switch and then through a normally closed brake pedal switch, then into the trans and through a normally open preasure switch in the firth gear presure port and then to the solinoid. The other wire from the solinoid goes to ground inside the trans.
The switch in the forth gear port is to only alow the TCC to lock when in forth gear. The manifold vacuum switch is to let the TCC lock and unlock only when the engine becomes under reduced load like cruising and unlock it when you push down on the accelerator. The brake pedal switch it to disengage the locked TCC when brakes are applied.
You can do this yourself with a little research or get a trans guy to correct the wiring inside the trans pan and you do the exterior wireing part.

Re: HELP...700R4
What we need here in the group = is a actual Tranny rebuilder as a van member. Someone who could advise us on all the trannys & rebuilding the different models =what to use & what not to- where to buy the kits & parts =wholesale that we need -- There has to be a tranny man that loves Vans somewhere????? Lets get a Thread here like disc brakes =only on trannys & mods.

Re: HELP...700R4
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT....man!!!!. I have decided to stick with my original idea for now. I will use the 66 rear witch I think has a better gear for that TH350 that I have . I can always switch it later once I figure this out and how to use it. Can't go see the tranny guy today, as I need to get the motor in and get the lift back to the person I borrowed it from tonight.

Re: HELP...700R4
remember = most all trannys with the overdrive gear are / have about a 30% reduction. there fore - 4:11 to 1 will get you an actual ( depends on tire size a little) a ratio of = 3:70's--------------- if memory= hehe serves me right 4:11 @ 60 mph was around=?? 4000rpm - there fore a 30% reduction would also relate to = 1200 rpm - so youll be at an rpm of 2700+- not bad - hehe so with a top RPM of say 7000rpm that van likely will be @ a speed of 17,000 MPH!! Wahch out Space shuttle program- The vans are Commin!! hehe = Happy Vannin!!!!
