'69 no carb included. That was kind of the ball park I was thinking. Have to see if he'll pull the oil pan and valve cover.

The 340 has a mystic to it, bo doubt. The thing is, a 360 magnum can often be found cheaper and can be built for more hp, dollar for dollar.
Then there is the 3rd gen hemi.
I wouldn't pay more than 500-700 for a complete 340.
Check the thrust, make sure no rods are sloppy on the crank and look at the cylinder bores below the pistons (rotate to see all). Also check how much slop is in the timing chain. Remember that the left engine mount is the different one, shared with the 360.
If it's torque you want, stroker kits are available.
If it's HP you want, look at heads and valvetrains.

take an 1-1/4 socket for the vibration dampner and wind it over two full turns and listen closely. next it is all about casting numbers on the block and heads. the one on the block should be a 7 digit number followed by the cubic inch size. in your case 340. good heads have a "j" or an "x" cast down by the spark plugs and you will need to remove the valve covers to get the exact casting number of the heads. the intake will have no provision for an egr valve at all if its a 69.

That's what I wanted to hear from you guys, walk away and go with a new 408 stroker. I heard Tim's econo yesterday at g-man's and it sold me on which way to go.
