I'm getting my parts ready for a swap to a 9". What gear is good to provide enough HP, w/o the 170 being more of a dog? Running 205/70/14 on the rear and going to be C4 auto. Right now it has 4:00's and it screams above 50mph. I wanna be able to cruise 65 comfortably. jeff

Re: Gearing for 170?
I had a 4.00 peanut before I switched to a 9", which has 3.50. Much better but I'm thinking 3.00 would be about ideal. I have a 200", but I doubt you'll have trouble with the 3.00.

Re: Gearing for 170?
My old 'Cassius Clay' van was a 170 and it had the small rear end with a 3.50 gear. It had 195/74-14 tires, which are about the same circumference as yours. As far as I'm concerned the gear was fine. I could cruise 70 on the highway and it pulled a small camper ok (not at 70 though!).

My current van is a 240 with a 3.00 gear. I doubt the 170 would pull a 3.00 with ease, a modified 200 probably could. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary, etc.

Stock (original) 170 w/ 3 spd, 9" w/3.50's. You wouldn't like 3.00's.....

Re: Gearing for 170?
I think the 3.50 is what is in my 62 toad... Just drove down US-23 to Tenn from Huntington and ran a comfortable 60mph most of the way... Hills are a dog but then the truck is a 62... lol ... the Mountains between KY and VA were interesting.... .... I didn't think that 38mph was too bad up one of those long steep mountains... that was as slow as it got and I was happy...... and just because, here is my traveling partner... (besides my wife)..
Truck has a re-manufactured stock 170 with a stock 3 on the tree (these are out of my first econo,a 63) and like i said I believe it to be a 3.50 rear end that is original to the 62. Hope this helps...
