Help on door panels Empty Help on door panels

Post by blackace Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:59 pm

Now that the weather has started to get to where you can be out without 3 pair of gloves on, I have started to clean up the truck and work on some of the detail work. Got the windshield washer system working, new hoses, and adjusted, and started to work on the door panels. This is turning into a bigger task then expected. They are in decent shape, but when my grand-dad brush painted the inside of the doors, he was not what you would say percise. I have scrapped and cleaned up the pannel as best as possible, but now the panel has mixed colors of black. does any one know of anything to re-color the panel? I used armor all on it but it just shined up the two different shades.

here is a pic of the panel after cleaned up and armor all. Does not look bad but the discolor is around the edges where the paint was. Have another one to do that is much worse in painted surface.

Most auto supply houses have vinyl (sometimes called upholstery) paint, especially in the color you need! That is black, right? Smile

First, strip off all that armor-all!
Then go to NAPA or a pro paint store and get the correct stuff to cover it. It would be a good idea to bring a sample so you can show them what you are doing and what you expect.

I've used that spray vinyl paint on my bucket seats in my ol firebird and held up really well... I was really surprised at how well it held up, it was about 3 years before I had to do any touch ups.

The spray vinly paint works great, don't cheep out on the brand you pick. Buying from an upholstery shop might be a good idea they will give you tips on use. Most products do recommend a vinly spray prep. Good luck

Well ended up picking up a duplica-color upholstery paint and did the cleaning, and prepping of the panels, with the before and after pics shown. Now I need to get the rest of the truck painted as it now makes the paint on the doors look bad.. Very Happy always something

    Wow! That came out great!
What did you use to clean the vinyl before the paint?

Does anyone know of a vinyl repair kit that can fill in cuts and ters?

I used standard dish soap, hot water and a tooth brush to clean the vinyl first, then washed it down with just water and let it air dry. Also used surgical gloves to keep any oils from fingers from getting back on the panels.

As for repairing any scratches or dents, I would think you could use any type of epoxy, but would need to duplicate the patterns on the panel. Since it is getting painted, as long as it sticks, should not be an issue.

Looking Good, Grampa must be happy with that .... were ever he is. Well done.

Vinyl repair, I know that there are guys out there that do a vinyl weld repair, but these guys are hard to find. You could try asking local upholstery places or a place that sell's used cars ..... they use this type of service often when around. The guy up here calls him self "Doctor Vinyl"
