Who is building the 4X4 early's chevy or ford. Where do they put the transfer case shifter. Is it cable or linkage.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
I am not using one at this time. I almost bought a 1976 chevy van 4X4 but it was a butched job so I am back to looking at building a 60's van 4X4. The chevy had the hole for the transfer case shifter right between the seats just back some. With the early's it would be way back and you couldn't reach it. Was wondering where they put it. Why do you ask which T case it is. I would like to talk to the person with the pictures of the chevy 4X4's in the picture section of this forum. I have my eye on a 62 ford I think it is.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
They make a cable system for most popular T-cases. If not the shifter is just mounted to an arm and is shifted with rods.......fab new mount for shifter, fab new shift rods. When converting an early to 4x4 there is no set way. There are to many combinations out there. I will be using K5 axles for ease of adapting the steering system to the axle. Since I'm a short WB and I want to use a 700R4, which is REALLY long with a T-case, I was thinking on a 4.3 V6 and move it forward to gain the length needed for the rear driveshaft. Might be able to do it with a V8 also, but I'm still in the designing/research phase of the upcoming build.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
my self i am i it the planning stage of makeing my 1970 90 wb panal a 4x4 been looking at blazers now till blue in the face.pros/cons are buy a hole donor truck or part bulid it out.i want a 327 small block in it. i want 3;73 gear ratio and stick with a turbo 350 or 400 trans, vanish suggested i go with a 300 transfer-case but it 500.00 to buy the adaptor kit. so i am just going stock chevy drive line for now and up grade latter. most of the donor trucks i find are priced to hi or they think the parts are gold.i did find a 1984 k5 today with everything i am looking for 3;73 alxels 327 smallblock and a 205 transfer-case guy wants $1000.00 nothing like bad timing HOLIDAYS TIME if he still has it in a week or two i am going to get it.i I have shoped this and mined racked this for awile now i want to get the parts get them cleaned up rebuld what needs rebulding and spring time start snaping things togther.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
I know what you mean on timing......I found a late 70's K5 for $300. The drivetrain was there but alot of the body was missing, but no cash right now and I'm not ready to start it yet I have a few other projects to complete first. Dont want the house to look like a junk yard.
The 205 T-case is almost bullet-proof and a good choice as far as I'm concerned. Even the late model 208 is good, both T-cases were used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. So our light little vans wont even tax them.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
Only way to tell that is to pull the diff cover and see. If its got a locker in the front, that would be unusual.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
Hardcore 4x4's have a selectable locker in the front, so they can turn it on and off. The will steer with a locker, but not very good.

Re: 4X4 early who is building them
I started working on one about 8 years ago, then I moved to a new house, and all work stopped on the 4x4. It's still out in the barn, has a 327 block stuck in it. Just another project thats not on any burner, it fell off the stove!
