Need help with steering box for my 1968 G-10 Empty Need help with steering box for my 1968 G-10

    Post by mister70s Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:10 am

    Dear Vanners,
I have been in search of a New or rebuilt steering box for my 68 G-10 for quite some time.
I decided to bite the bullet and buy one online at a high price (over $300)

When it arrived a few days ago it was NOT the right box...not even close !!

I spoke with Donivan the other day and he sent me pics of a spare he has for referance...but he mentioned that his steering box might be different because his van is a first generation and mine is a second.

Can anyone tell me if the first generation steering boxes and second are the same or different ??

Also...The company that sold me the steering box also said if they could get some casting numbers from a 1967-1969 G-10 steering box they MIGHT be able to match it up....

If anyone can assist me I can be reached at 845 418 0704 or email me at mr70s@verizon.net

Thank you all so much !

Looking at this I would say they are the same. I don't know if the casting number is the same as the Part #, but you might try.

Well,,,,,according to that, the 5697824 replaces the 5691769 1st Gen steering box. And the 5697824 also fits a 68 which Paulie has,,,,,,so I can get casting numbers off a 1st Gen for him,,,,,,,,,,

WE,,,,,,will put it back together, and WE will adjust it,,,,,,,,but 1 step at a time,,,,,it's all apart, (1 nut and 4 bolts and in 5 minutes it's all apart),,,,,and let's see if we can figure out how they come up with $350 to rebuild it with a $100 core charge ,,,,,,,I ain't seen it yet,,,,,,I see a seal, a paper cover gasket,,,,,2 bearings,,,,,2 bronze bushings and 54 ball bearings,,,,,,,Paulie got a lot of money so he can buy one,,,,,I might take my spare over to the shop,,,,,,(he says it's in San Diego), and show them what he needs. They sent him a wrong one in New York. So we might as well learn everything we can from this one that was just sitting on my bench minding it's own business an hour ago,,,,,,,,,

    Don,thanks for posting that video..
I have been real lucky none of the steering boxes on any of my Earlies have ever been worn out or sloppy.

like radiators for 2nd gen vans the reman / after market people, for what ever reason clump the 70 manufacture date on 3rd gen vans in with the 69 to 70 dates on our 2nd gen vans.
They are very bad number crunchers........
Only owners of these vans really know what is really what's on our vans......

The older they get,,,,,,,the newer the problems,,,,,,,and what are the odds of getting a rebuild kit for a worn out steering box right now? Those other places mention something about installing needle bearings in an old box,,,,,,that would come under a steering box upgrade rather than a rebuild in my book. That sector shaft just uses bronze bushings on it,,,,,,just like the kingpins,,,,,,adding needle bearings to that shaft looks like it would make steering a lot more easier. But we aint done yet talking about steering boxes,,,,,,lets see what else we dig up while we are on this subject,,,,,,

Ok,,,,,,,,lets see what we got,,,,,,,and adjust it,,,,,,sign says 2 lbs to turn the steering wheel is correct, so lets go put 1 pound on the worm shaft bearings with that cap and big lock nut and another 1 pound by cranking in that set screw on the sector shaft cover,,,,,,

    Post by mister70s Sun Oct 03, 2010 4:30 am

I can honestly say that this tutorial has been wonderful, I will take your advice Doni and rebuild a steering box myself, and keep my old one as a spare.....

And after looking at the posts of other vanners....It's safe to say that the box is probably not worn....it's probably another front end part that is more simple to replace...

Thanks for posting the sequel....the steering box you have not only looks perfect...it is adjusted perfect...

Now the only thing it's missing is being installed in my perfect little van.....lol lol lol

Thanks again Doni !!! Very Happy

So my steering wheel has lots of travel in it, I just rock that steering wheel side to side to keep it straight. Should I top off the oil like you listed, and then tighten that bolt to maybe clear-up some of that play?

And what oil, just use motor oil?

I think 2nd Gens might not have a fill plug,,,,,,and you want to put grease in it,,,,,rock the steering wheel,,,,,if the pitman arm moves, then the problem is not in the steering box,,,,,,if the pitman arm does not move, then the problem is in the steering box and try and adjust the set screw on the side of the cover.....
