Re: Econopoor's 67 8 door.
Did a little more work today. The little corner filler was pretty bent up from the hit. I thought I'd beat it back into shape but decided to just replace it. I had this corner that I salvaged from a 62 pickup and I spent the day cutting it loose.
It took me a while to get it out as it was welded on all sides and I wanted to save as many panels as possible. I did manage to save all the usable parts from this section.
I need to get this welded in before I put the nose on as the welds won't be accessible once I cover it. I got my POR 15 kit the other day so I can start getting the all this metal protected. Hopefully put an end to future rust problems.
I found this when I got the donor section apart. This is a common problem area on E trucks. Water gets inside the door jamb thru a rusted out windshield frame or unsealed door hinge. The bottom of the jamb gets filled with crud and the jamb starts holding water causing it to rust from the inside out. I need to address this on my van before I go any further. I'm thinking I'll drill some small access holes to treat the inside with some rust converter and POR 15. I also plan on enlarging the drains at the bottom of the jambs so they don't get stopped up. Anybody have a better plan for dealing with a blind area like this?
Thanks.

Re: Econopoor's 67 8 door.
After I cleaned up the nose I had I decided it was too rusty to use. I sandblasted some of the rust on the back side and it just started blowing holes in the metal. I went ahead and welded it on the van so I could put the doors back on and put it away until I get a replacement nose. I have one lined up but it's going to take a while to get it to Tennessee. I'm just going to put this one back in the barn until it gets here. I just welded the butt joints. I didn't weld it around the edges. Just ran a few sheet metal screws in it to hold it in place. Shame it didn't work out. The welding went nice. LOL.
Oh Well! Better luck next time.

Duane, are you able to lead the holes or would that add too much weight?

Re: Econopoor's 67 8 door.
Well, I could fix it. The nose is heavily pitted all along the back side. I'm more worried about the structural integrity of the nose. The metal is so thin along the bottom that I think any kind of impact would collapse the front end. There is not much up front as it is. I'd hate to weaken it any more. I think it would be best to replace it with some good metal. It's a real shame though. This was some really straight metal. It just had too much hidden rust. The patch really went well too. A light skim coat and a little block sanding and it would have looked great. It will be ok. I'll get some good metal and replace it. It will be as good as new then. Might save this nose though. It will make a cool sign to hang on the side of my barn. LOL.

Thanks G-Man. I went and looked it up. It looks interesting. If it was closer I might have went and took a look at it. That's a big deal to drag home. Too big for the vanner express also. With it being right in the heart of the rust belt I'd be really scared of it also. I'm just on the edge of the belt and I have enough of it. I lived in northren Ohio and know how stuff is up there. I need some desert metal. LOL.
Thanks.

There is a guy in Oklahoma that is parting out a vanup and my body guy bought the doors for mine and said the doors were in good shape you might try him. I'll get the info for you if you want it.

Hey Carl,
I have a deal in the works for it. Just trying to work out it's way south. It's north of the border at the moment.
