The motor is finally in the van. I am having a little interference with the floor and doghouse and the clifford (bronco) headers. The header interferes by about an inch with the floor. Right at the point in the header that collects the three individuals together. denting the header doesnt seem to be an option. Am I gonna have to modify the floor and doghouse? Fab up an enlarged housing? Or did I get the wrong header?

    Electronic ignition question:

The Mallory unilite is at the top of my list. Do i need to get other components like a coil and power box? or is the mallory unilite self contained?

Can't post the pics right now, will this evening,, I modify all of them!!!! you need the air circulation, as well as easier access for the plugs,,, T here is section where Vannin posted some pics of the one I am presently working on for a customer. Shows in detail, how I also, welded in 1/4" thick material where the new bolt pattern would be to make it plumb with the rest of the raised gusset areas and floor level.

Just the unilite distributor will do. You will need a ballast resistor though. You can get the Mallory Hy Fire 6 and the Mallory Promaster coil but you don't really need them. Just get a a good Mallory coil for around $45.00. Get them all on ebay. You will get a better price. I have the Mallory unlite for the 240 I am putting in my 61 Econo pickup as well as the HyFire6 and Promaster Coil with a set of Live wire red spark plug cables but that cost a lot of money that you don't need to spend on the 200.

When my 'ol trusty 240 retired I found a rusted out late '70's truck with low mileage ( Alaska salts the roads and they rust out fast ) and swapped all the gear and the 300 into my '65. She fits abit tight but shes in there good and runs strong.

There are several differences in the doghouses, actually three different setups that I recall. The earlies of course shorter in height, but also, two latches instead of one, and no rear hump. The 65 to 67's also, had two different setups, all with a bulge on the drivers side for for the 240 alternator, (even if only a 170), the difference in the passengers side, with one as an added (afterthought) fiberglass extra bulge for a thermactor pump. You can add or graft a solid pc to fill that hole up if you get that type but easier to use the one without it. Both use most of the existing early bolt holes, of course you should add the hump to your floor board in the rear, (I JUST happen to have some for sale,, LOL),,, and add the cutout on the drivers side to match the late doghouse one.
You kinda lost me with the "TRANSFER BOX"??? are you converting to 4whl drive also?????
If not? and using the big six transmission,, you can put your donut mount tail stock from your transmission onto the big six tranny and use the original donout mount (although not strong enough in my thinking)??? I also, have one of these for sale,,, so either way you will have a solid output yoke short tail stock to use,, different story if using a transfer box. DON'T FORGET, even a built 200 really should use a real cross member as it is at the marginal point for horsepower, IF you go to the 300 it IS A MUST HAVE!!! as well as a real rear axle,,,

Just Curious. When we see threads like this why there is not more consideration for a sbf (302) ? It is such a simple swap and the 302's and AOD's are available a dime a dozen. I like a more radical engine so built a little 302 with some attitude that sounds great and has a little hp behind it. Just asking....

Well...my answer would be: it's even easier to drop a big six in and they can be built to put out pretty serious HP, too. cheers

I have ALWAYS said that I think the 302 is one of the best engines anyone has ever built, and personally think it is much easier to convert into ours. Unlike the Chevy small blocks, the 302 needs RPM to get its power because of the larger bore and smaller stroke to get the same cubes. The Chevy's with a longer stroke, meaning more monkey motion in the cylinders and more cylinder taper and less miles. Its not uncommon at all to take a 302 with 150,000 plus miles on it, and simply re ring it as it doesn't have much taper in it, they will run for ever.
I cant stand the exhaust bolted to the intake on the big sixes, it simply takes too much work and hassle to get rid of the heat soak in the carb, and fuel boiling. To make a runner out of it, the intake either hits the doghouse, and or a special little box to accommodate the carb sticking out the side of it, then there is the air cleaner to deal with,,, its just too much hassle.
A 302 puts the carb and the air cleaner right in the middle, its a small, and can go in there without modifying the house. (not recommended though). Its purr fect,, and much easier over all, and no six can ever match the growl. I modify the doghouses to expand under the seats, and really is no loss at all.
