    gas tank capacity....and mpg on a 1970 A-100 Empty gas tank capacity....and mpg on a 1970 A-100

Post by Hamilton Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:09 pm

filled up my tank today (added to what was already there) and was curious, anyone know what the capacity is on a tank for these vans? looked in my manual and searched here and not seeing it...

with a 318, anyone know what MPG to expect out of city driving/occasional highway use before I have to refuel?

...plan to get help with replacing my sending unit soon....

    thanks!

My '65 has a 22 gallon tank in it, don't know about the mpg and don't think I'd trust the stock odometer anyway (my speedo swings +/- 10mph anyway).

Sending unit replacement is pretty easy but you have to drop the tank, there's not enough room to r/r the sender otherwise (can't get it out of the tank). dropping it takes about an hour in the driveway. Jack up the back, unhook the fuel line, drop the tank strap (a single lock nut) and it's free.

I pumped to gas out my tank (into 5 gallon cans) with an electric fuel pump. My gas gauge is still not working either, I sent a spare gauge off and had the internal voltage limiter bypassed and the gauge tested/verified to work but I haven't had a chance to install it yet.

There's picts of my tank swap process in my signature image gallery if you want to see them.

earlier vans (single strap frome frame rail to frame rail ) has 18 gal the newer a's double strap hold 21 gallons. Id say you have a 21 gallon tank in that 108 sportsman. I usually stop every 200 miles to streach and refuel. by then its just under half tank

ahh, I didn't know they switched to a two strap tank, mine has one going left to right Smile

I can't pull my sender out like the other poster says, it hits the body, I don't twist it all around and all that either though, too scared of messing up the rheostat.

As far as the MPG, won't the gear set in the rear end determine what that number is. On my 68 A100PU, it has 391 gears in the Suregrip reareand and seems to drink the gas when I am on highway speeds as the rpm are high. These gears are set more for pulling tree stumps then driving down the highway at 60-65 mph. Just something to think about.

My '66 has a 273 with a stock Stromberg 2BBL carb, 3.55 gears and a 21 gallon tank. I average about 24 mpg. I usually get 500 miles out of a tank, but I've never run it dry. I'm running stock 8.15x15 bias-ply tires on it.

    My '65 has a 225 /6 with a 2BBL Holley carb, 3.91 gears and 14 inch radials. It averages around 16mpg.
