The No Door arrives Empty The No Door arrives

Post by Guest Fri Aug 06, 2010 1:11 pm

    What's this?
    The No Door arrives Dscn0013
A man with a big truck?
    and...
    The No Door arrives Dscn0012
    Is it a pony?
    Shadowfax
Looks like it was a good horse, that got rode hard and put away wet.
But it's still a good horse.
    The No Door arrives Dscn0014

The body is just what ya see here.
Nothing major, except two smallholes cut in the roof for vents.
    Keystone Mags and good radials.
    I don't see any rust-thru anywhere.
It's got a factory automatic (pretty sure it's a powerglide, since it has the cast webbing grid on top of the housing), with the proper tail-shaft housing/trans mount hanger, the shifter has the PNRD21 needle indicator, but the clear plastic with the actual letters is gone.
The wind wings have been removed, but only plexiglass replaces the driver and pax windows.
The door handles have been shaved, without thought for how to get in and out since nothing but inner door handles remain.
The only real bondo I find is on one corner rocker, under the fuel filler
The door jambs on front aren't rusted out.
    The No Door arrives Dscn0110
The spring hangers aren't bent or rusted out.
Dual exhaust for that full fart sound from the 6-banger... Very Happy
    The No Door arrives Dscn0111
The grill is straight as an arrow, the bumpers are gonna get removed, and the frame horn holes filled for the 'roll pan' look front and rear.
    The No Door arrives Dscn0112
The pan shroud has a hole cut in it... o.0

    and the best part?
    The No Door arrives Dscn0114
that it already has a bed in back?
    NO!
    The No Door arrives Dscn0113

    Blown Out Glasspacks!

    woohoo!

    Very Happy

It's a project, to be sure, but it's a whale of a start.
The body is got just a few minor dings here and there.
It's straight and solid, and an automatic... Very Happy

Gonna have'ta do a bond title for it.
Hopefully it doesn't turn up as a key piece of evidence in the trial of the 9/11 hijackers...

I think that I got such a good deal, cause the guy that sold it to me used it as a love shack, and his current squeeze was none too pleased he still had it around, when he should be settled down...

I'm pretty sure this pic shows both the two barrel carb and the fact that it's not the stock motor, and if you squint, behind the carb are the two down-tubes of the split manifold exhaust system.
No headers, and I'm sure it's not the stock motor.
But the motor comes under the heading of '...bfd...'
The transmission is of major interest to me, since it's got the yoke tail-shaft housing.

The guy had an actually pretty good idea for One Piece Windows.
    The No Door arrives Dscn0116

A slot, cut into the back of the door, behind the window.
A new slide bed track installed, the window no longer rolls up and down, with the door open, it slides out for storage through the rear slot.
    No buttons needed.
    Kind'a cool on the cheap.
He did some hardy fabrication work to make them kinda sturdy.
With new slides and real glass it might be workable, to have the windows either all the way up or down (in/out) for now.
Not the worst piece of thought I've ever seen on a vehicle.

It's got the hole in the floor for the clutch pedal.
Does anyone else with a factory automatic have a solid floor without the hole?

I'm also wondering, in the pan shroud pic, if the steering knuckle should be that close to the frame?

A BB would be wild, but the cubes they are getting these days from a SB will make it thump just as well without the swap issues, airflow issues once it's in and the radiator you'd need to keep to cool.

In response to the question about factory automatic vans and holes in the floor for a clutch pedal. My factory automatic '69 G20 has a plastic plug filling the hole. The plug is the same as the ones used to cover the upper hinge bolt on each front door. My floor has the stamping for a clutch pedal option. The frame also has the four threaded holes to bolt the clutch pedal linkage to. The holes are open with no bolts. You have a rare find and treasure it. I would be proud to own that no-door.

That's some nice looking iron, but there can't be any water-jacket sleeves between those cylinders, it's too thin.

I'm just day dreaming about the Big Block.

It's gonna get a relatively stock 327 or 350, late model heads ported to match the intake, headers and a cam to go with the automatic.

The brakes will be updated to disk/drum.

Make sure it's got some nice cruising gears 3.35 or so, and all smooth in the rearend with some nice big tires in back.

Should do alright, as long as I don't try and push that billboard down the road too fast... Very Happy

    Thanks KC.
I just looked a it closer, and it too has the rubber plug you mentioned.
    It is a jewel.
I am pretty stoked that I got it for such a good price, since the body is in such good shape.
I need to get some primer on it right away, to prevent any further degradation of the sacred skin.

It's gonna need some side view mirrors, since there are no windows to peek out of.
Maybe that's what the two holes in the roof are for?

Hey I looked at that van for sale in Tacoma a couple years ago.

I'm glad to see somebody here took it under their wing. It seemed pretty solid. I think that is a later 250 engine with the integrated manifolds if I remember correctly. Had potential to be a nice project.

I can see why he got rid of the van, instead of the girlfriend.
    It'd be close...

Anyway, I took the van to the shop yesterday.

It had been sitting in the yard in rainy Washington so long that it actually had some kinda moss growing on it.

The guys at the shop looked at it like "uhhh... Huh?" Very Happy

Anyway, it's gonna get the barnacles scraped off and the bare metal/surface rust spots smoothed out the top cleaned up, and a coat of primer sprayed on to keep the age process slowed to a crawl.

Not doing any of the body work yet, I want to get the flat black on it, and see exactly where all the work is that need doing.

There really isn't much, a ding or two hear, a crease or two there.

The two holes in the roof are both off-center to the driver's side, so they're already on the to-do list.

The crease and the corner on the pax side rear need some ding work, and there are a couple of small dings on the rear drive side wheel radius

The dash has a small dent in the radio speaker grill, and it's been cut for another radio, so I think it's all just gonna get filled in and holes as needed between the dashboard and glovebox.

I wonder what happened to the chrome bumpers?

Someone already started drilling out the doghouse spotwelds for the changeover to a 2nd gen, or custom?

I'm wondering now if it's possible to find the production numbers for no door bodies (and the one's with automatics) in 1964?
    I'm thinking it's pretty low...
