Anyone using a steering stabilizer on their front end? I removed a well worn out one ( don't know why it was still there) I found one online from MOOG for $60. And says it is for 64-66 Chevy G-10 vans. Any pro's or con's to using one?

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
Seems like that would lessen the play a little bit in old, worn out steering boxes. Of course the play would be the same it just wouldn't feel the same. If anybody has used the Moog part stated above (or any other available assembly), I'd love to know the part number and their experience--especially if it adds any considerable effort to turning the wheel (I have to park in tight places). Thanks!

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
I personally never noticed any difference, just got rid of any shimmy when you hit bad roads! I have used it for a long time and it has held up nice.

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
It sure makes my van hard to park,,,,,,,its just a shock absorber,,,,,,the faster you turn the steering wheel, the harder it becomes,,,,,but its been on there a long time,,,,,,and I got wide tires, offset Mags and disk rotors on it so those are the worst conditions for easy steering anyways,,,,,,,,but it does help the handling, especially in wind, when you are going down the road.

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
After completing the disc brake install I need the front end aligned. Got that done this morning. The shop is awesome...they do things the old school way...speed balance the tires on the car! Hard to find anyone who does that anymore....so they started the alignment and got the toe in set correctly but camber was out of wack...had to tweek the axle to set.....turned out great...steering wheel almost lined up so pulled the steering wheel and centered it. Installed the steering stabilizer. It does add some(very little) effort to the steering but it absorbs almost all the play out of the worn gear box...definitely makes it more pleasurable to drive.

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
D65 they have a set of rams and chains on their alignment lift... they wrap they chains around the axle and then use the hydraulic rams to push the axle up with the chains holding the axle and actually bend the axle slightly to gain the camber needed..it is not much ...the reason these old axles need adjusting is caused by the PO's that would jack the van up using the center of the front front axle creating a bowed axle...the alignment is simply reversing that abuse and bringing it back to specs. I only jack the front end up being as close the the leaf perch as possible.

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
D65 yes more on driver side then pass. side....he said he could adjust positive or negative....but like I said a lot of folks think its ok to jack the front end up from the center of the axle..when doing this it slowly arcs the axle up in the center causing positive camber....Don't know if it all occurs at once or over a period of years...but it seems to happen...

Re: Steering Stabilizer?
The front axle sure does not get much attention,,,,like on my van, the front tires started wearing out on the insides, but there was like over 300,000 miles on that axle. The Camber was way negative,,,the tops of the tires tilted in,,,,from old age,,,overloading the vehicle, hitting a curb or speed bump too fast,,,,,so you do need more than just the toe in checked,,,,,,,,,
