but I think brn/wt is for the charging system.

Thats right,,,,Brown goes to the #4 terminal on the voltage regulator. And there is no accessory position on an ORIGINAL 64 Chevy Van ignition switch.

OK, it would be safe to say that I have a non- original IGN switch. The van came with a single wire ALT conversion, so do I need the Brown/White wire for anything?

It would be used for the idiot light for the charging system on the dash and to energize a 3rd Gen 3 wire alternator, but if you have voltmeter and a real 1 wire alternator, it won't be needed. To test it, undo it out of the connector, put a 12 volt test light between the wire and the terminal you took it off and start the van,,,,,,,if it lights, then that means that something is using that wire. If the test light does not light, that means the wire goes nowhere.

OK, I know that the voltage regulator was not connected to anything when I bought the van and drove it home; it has since been removed. The ALt (internal regulator)
is wired as a single wire as described in info I got from another website (Big red wire to BAT, jumper from #2 terminal to Red BAT wire and #1 terminal to GEN light.
I also cross referenced to a 64 Olds shop manual wiring diagram and confirmed that the Brown/White wire connects to the ACC terminal on the IGN switch.
