I'm trying to find out if there's a source for either a used (unless someone still makes new ones) bug protector for the front end, or some pattern, suggestions or instructions available somewhere to make my own.

A tarp,a blade to cut out the headlight holes and bungee cords.Be sure to wrap the metal ends of the cords with ripped up rags,so ya don't scratch your PAINT...

As van go said, the pattern is right there in front of you!
I'd check out the local pro upholstery shop. They should be able to whip one up for you. Just make sure that it's nice and soft wherever it touches and it's tight when installed so it doesn't flap and wear your paint.
