Sometimes people change things, so you need to find out which engine and trans you got and then you can find out what you can change. So Guys, if he wants that 250, then what are his choices for a transmission that will fit in his van?

If theres a trans. crossmember its not original. If it hangs off the stock mount its out of a 64 or at least a 64 tailshaft. Im not familiar with the 250 but I think Fred is.

The Econo tranny has a short tail housing on it. I am not sure but I think the motor should bolt on but there are still other mods you would have to do.

If the transmission is bolted to a 144/170 or 200 it will not bolt to a 250. The 250 uses the same bell housing as a 240/300/289/302. The 250 will not bolt to the motor mounts either.

So by making up a engine/trans mount and a driveshaft, what choices would he have for the 144 family of engines,,,,,,and how about the 240 family?

To Install the 250 in a 61 is a lot of work. The engine is taller, wider and uses a larger bell housing. All of these cause problems. Since the engine is wider it won't fit on the original cantilever arm mounts, you could shorten them but the added power and weight of the 250 puts them at their limit. I have done it with no problems but using a tubular crossmember from a 65-67 would be the best choice. You'll have to fabricate some mounts to attach it to the frame and modify the engine mount towers to fit the 250 to it. Second problem is the height of the motor. It will fit in the 61-64 motor box but the carb will hit the cover. You'll have to swap over to a taller 65-67 box. Third problem is the larger bell housing, it wil hit the floor at the rear of the motor box. You'll have to put the floor hump in also. Next is the transmission mount, good luck finding a 64 auto tailshaft, at least for a resonable price. Better to use the 65-67 style and buy an adapter from Blue Oval. You'll also have to upgrade to a 9" rear axle and you'll need the large u-joint driveshaft. For the amount of work involved it's simpler to just bolt a 200 in. After all that is said I am putting a 250 automatic in my 63 pickup. I have all the parts though.
