    Kowboy, I found info on this casting number today and remembered you asking..

    3994257 67 - '72 250 cu in.

    Ok all youze 6 cyl.- guys - whats the largest 6 cyl chev engine (gas type) That is made and could be installed in an early?? I know ford made a 300=?/

    and an avaliable crane camshaft, cylinder head work, with a four barrell intake and headers nets you about 300 hp.

    Keep in mind that The Chevy 292 was an inline, six-cylinder engine with a bore and stroke of 3.875 inches by 4.125 inches and a compression ratio of 8.0-to-1. It achieved a maximum 165 gross-horsepower at 3,800 rpm and netted 147 horsepower at 3,600 rpm. It reached its maximum gross torque of 280 pound-feet at 1,600 rpm and netted 262 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm.

    Basically it's a tractor motor. It will get fairly poor gas milage no matter what you do but if your looking at towing, it has enough torque to climb a tree! The 250 is a very good mix of both. You can get 18mpg if configured correctly and still tow with ease.

    Hello Dan,

    During my search for the casting number on my block (which listing I can't find anywhere) I was directed to this old post. Maybe you can help.

    I bought a long block Chevy inline 250 crate motor from Summit Racing, that was manufactured in Mexico by VEGE (yeah I'm taking a chance, but a rebuild was hard to find) :

    The casting numbers are : On the passenger side of the block - 3994267; Then the stamped on the deck near the distributor is - F1223CAB; The number on the head is 3962084.

    It looks identical to my old 250, that was previously bored 060 and all worn out... so junked.

    Water pump, bell housing, distributor, flywheel, side valve stem covers, timing chain cover, all bolt up. Must have tried a dozen places on the Internet but no dice on this casting number.

    Maybe you can find it on your first try! What do you think?

    NEVERMIND!!!

    After I couldn't find the number 3994267... and the number 3994257 kept turning up everywhere, I double checked the block casting and found I made a mistake.

    It reads 57 not 67.

    Small tid bit for "F1223CAB". With the last three charters (CAB) on the build code being three letters it provides a hint that the engine is a post 1969 build. Prior to 1970 the L6 engines used two letter codes.

    64 golden Oldie came with a newer 6 with a # of F0224CJH. (Flint/ April /24(CJH???)GM- L6 Enginne Block Casting Numbers Img_0755

    also has a T350 in it. Might of came with motor??
