"Clicks" in (or under) my '64???? Empty "Clicks" in (or under) my '64????

Post by Skulptorchaz Fri Dec 22, 2023 7:46 am

Hey folks, I have been battling this for awhile. It seems I have a loud "Clicking " or snapping noise in my van while driving it. A buddy seems to think it is actually under the van. From the drivers seat, it sounds more like in the area of the side AND back doors. It happens all the time but it doesn't have to hit a bump or anything like that to do it.
Have any of you had that issue? It's hard to get under mine with side pipes and being lowered a bit.
    Thanks in advance!

That was my first thought too but, not the case.
It's a creeking, sorta rubbing noise, and it seems it happens when the body flex's. I can tell from the drivers seat that it is definitely coming from at least 2 places. It's LOUD.
I'm really hoping maybe someone has experienced it so I can get on with fixing it. The diagnosis seems like it could take awhile.
    Thank buddy.

Well, Anything you get from this thread will be guesses..... Here's mine: Loose door latch bars......
Is it intermittant or does it occur during specific motion...... If it clicks at a steady rate that increases with speed, you'd want to ascertain whether it's still there if you push in the clutch or put it in neutral or lightly apply the brakes.....Is it still there if you pull the parking brake a couple of clicks? Is the exhaust hung securely and not able to rattle against anything? Loose parts in a brake drum? Zip ties around your drive shaft? (stupid prank!)..... There is all sorts of opportunities for rattles in the stock hard linkages (shift, clutch and throttle).... Could also be something ominous like a broken piece laying in the bottom of the differential.....
Stay at it and you'll figure it out!

    Thanks Don.
Yeah, none of those. (If a friend trys the zip tie thing on me, well, payback is a bitch Laughing )
It's like a loud "creek" kind of noise or something. Like a broken frame or structural piece that will ocassionally or randomly - no rythm, rhyme or reason - but it does it all the time.
Sorry, it's just hard to explain. When it is just sitting there in park, I can jump up and down on the bumper and I can maybe get it to do it once, but then no more. it seems like the body, not suspension or drive line. If they had actual "frames", I would be looking around that.
I was just hoping maybe it was an inherant problem that others may have experienced.
I gotta say, it's wierd and it's really bothersome. I won't take people in it, because of it.....and I love to drive it.
Thanks for your time guys. Maybe someone has had this happen as well.

This was done before me. It's airbagged.
I could definitely be wrong but, I would think jumping on the bumper would make the noise if it were suspension. It won't. I will look around under there at those things, when I can actually get under there but, The manner in which it creeks kind of leads me away from that.
    It really is wierd.
    Thanks for the suggestion!!!

leaf springs sliding on each other can make a variety of different noises...I've also seen dead shocks make noises that you'd only find by removing one end and pushing it manually through it's full travel

on-line diagnosis is impossible, “I can't describe it” is even more difficult.
Could U have some1 sit near the sound as U drive?
If certain conditions elicit it have some 1 out side @ curb as U recreate/drive by?
Only occurs when driven? do so under different conditions (over bumps, none, fast, slo, up hill, etc). New tires? swap backs to frnts~

U must begin to B a scientist (experiment/gather data then make hypothesis) or give ur $ to some 1 else. Even then U have done so lill wrk the guy might not know “Wasss ‘SUp”.  Like when did it start, how long has it been around, what wuz last bit of wrk on vehicle

    Good Luck

I appreciate the input Chris but I was mainly just asking if anyone had ever experienced this. If it was a possible inherant issue or just mine. I was just trying to save some time.

Hey Chaz, my van makes a noise that seems like what you're experiencing. I'd describe mine as a metal-on-metal scraping sound emitting from up front on the passenger side. It doesn't do it all the time. It is not related to MPH or RPM. I can't get it to happen by jumping on the bumper to bounce the van.

I'll see if I can get a recording of the sound and post it here. I agree,we need to use the scientific approach. Maybe we can all help figure this out!

Thanks VANagain!!! We may have similiar issues. Mine sounds more like it's coming from in front of the drivers side rear wheel well. That spring perch has me suspect. If it is, it could be your issue asc well, only a different perch. (maybe?) I will post what I find and, if you would, post yours too. Hopefully this thread could help others in the future.

Chrisful, I'm not sure where you are coming from but, my name, the OP, is Chaz. What would you like to keep talking about? Is this a smartass remark? Just curious.

Hey man, all things considered, it certainly sounded like it COULD be a smartass remark to me. Why you would have made it, I had no idea. If you want, since you suggested it, you can also look back many years and see I don't start any trouble either. I also do my best to stress to people that I am very appreciative of any help they take their time to offer.

So now, I did not consider it first thing, as you assume. I pondered it for quite awhile actually, trying to figure it out. Then instead of accusing, I asked. In a rather quite respectful way I might add.
I NEVER tried to start a beef. Never have. Far from it. The way I read your writing (which I might say is not exactly traditional, but yeah, I get it) first off, MY name is Chaz and I posted it as such. It seemed that you were in some way correcting VANagain. Then when I read "keep talking", I read that term as a term used when a person wants someone else to shut up or there is going to be trouble. Again, I did not know why you wrote that so, I asked. You see where I am coming from? I can only read your words, I cannot read your emphasis, intentions or your meaning in them.
Now, as far as what I assume is your name, Chad, I had not seen any reference to it and it is MY mistake that I mistook Chrlsful as Chrisful. I thought that possibly indicated your name was Chris. That is my bad and I had to just now look close at it to see it. Sorry, I only have one eye.
I thought you might like an explanation so there you have it. Take it for what you will.
    Cheers.

Hey Redvango. Thanks. I appreciate it. One takeaway from your post is that I don't feel so bad about my seeing ability now. It seems you also saw Chad's handle as " Chrisful ". LOL. Smile I was bummed I had his name wrong, even tho I have one eye and it is 64 yo.Very Happy
All your points are noted and appreciated!!!! BTW, I did not give my bio earlier because often, it seems that person wants to brag, boast or seem "above" anyone else. I do not, and am not. What I am however is a 45 year veteran fabricator with my own shop and build cars on the side. (There is always one in my shop. Two, presently.) That said, I ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, appreciate someone lending helpful insight or a possible remedy to a problem as I believe no man knows it all. I definitely learn from others as well as trial and error. Learning from others who have ''been there done that", is a lot easier and definitely time saving. I am probably one of the most appreciative people you would ever meet.
In regards to the van, that vehicle is mine and when I have something I like, I keep it... and I LIKE it! (I have 3 vehicles for over 40 years.) I was mainly asking if anyone had ever had this issue. (It seems VANagain may have.) Either way, I appreciate any, and all suggestions!!!! I do but, I will also call out or ask questions if I am not sure, which I did, and it took us down this path.
AGAIN, thank you and I appreciate any and all suggestions. My sincere hope is that this thread will help others in the future, one way or another.
    The best to ya!

Hey guys, I wanted to tell you what I found.
It seems it is the front spring hanger on the drivers side. The bushings are basically new from the PO as he air bagged it. I got it up on a lift and sprayed WD-40 AND white lithium around it the best I could without taking it apart to see if it would help and it did. So now, I will pull it all apart and lube it correctly.
Thanks for all the help!!!!! (Now, back to the body. Still looking for an entry cargo door.)
