Door Hinge gaps Empty Door Hinge gaps

Looking for info on where the door hinges go thru the door skins. I've removed some chunky stuff, might be years of old wax maybe rubber. Were there rubber seals that sealed the gaps? not sure if there was anything there originally. Any info appreciated.

Yes the doors had rubber when made originally. Mine still have the hard painted over old rubber in the gaps.
If you have dug out the material you can buy new rubbers for the doors. I have heard of two ways to add the rubber:
    1. Cut rubber and place around the hinge then glue.
    2. Remove the doors and place over the hinge.

I have not done either but many better than I have done it both ways. I am sure you'll get it done well. I think Steele Rubber has them? But again, I have been LAZY so I did not buy them...

Actually the door hinges on the first gen van did not have the rubber seals, The gap was filled with sealant from the factory and that is also what the service manual says to do. However, many persons like myself like to use the rubber gaskets that were actually for the CorVan.

Sorry , You have to click on the picture to ssee the full image with the text about the sealer

That explains the crud in the painted areas. I just thought it was really hard old painted rubber. Thanks again for teaching me something.

though the rubber hinge grommets are expensive I used them because they make a nice detail

by the way door hinge gaskets from Steel rubber + very well made.
Door hinge gaskets from Clarks Corvair + not so good.

and though the front door hinges are a little different in size. the same gaskets stretch over them just fine.
