Smittybilt 44801 Black Low Back Seat

Since I needed a new driver's seat, broken springs, I was very interested in posts related to this seat but could not find anybody that had actually installed so I purchased one and will add details as the fabrication progresses.

I made 6 calls to manufacturers and distributors to try and get the bolt pattern from the seat, nobody could provide, seriously??

Overall they measure basically the same but from a butt feel the Smitty feels a little lower which is good since any bracketry will not cause it to sit higher.

Seat looks good, seems well constructed so should be a good fit.  

I found that the drivers seat, with the adjustment, has different attachment point from the passenger so I'm starting with the passenger seat and will follow up with drivers.

OK, the passenger seat is done.


What is evident from the pictures is that the stock seat mounts are wider than the Smittybilt seat and needs to be shifted rearward to keep he leading edge in the same position.

The other item to consider is that the mounting locations are a bit lower than the seat frame where it attaches to the stock frame so I installed 3/8" spacer.

I started with 1/8" steel but added a second bracket to get it stronger.

Fits great, looks good, height is the same.

Drivers will be next but that is going to require more fab work due to the slides but that should allow me to shift the seat rearward to get some more leg room.

If anybody wants a .DXF file for the main brackets I can send.

Finally got the drivers side complete!

Discovered that other than the seat and the bracket on the wheel well there is nothing similar between the two seats including the dog hose is shifted over about 2" toward passenger side.

The drivers seat with the for/aft adjustment puts the attaching bracket next to dog house  1 1/4" lower and the bolt pattern is different.

I could not figure out a way to keep the adjustment so opted to put the drivers seat in a fixed position.  Seat adjustment was to close so I moved it back 1".  For me it fits great.

Battery box, battery cables, seats, 3-point harnesses are all done, now need to get some drive time in and hit the dream cruze!

Its a 62!

So after 3 months of work getting all the safety items resolved I got it back on the road tonight and was plesently surprised that it started right up after that length of time.

Good news the seats and belts fit great together but boy does it feel like a 55 year old truck, at least now I'm not falling out the drivers door from the broken original seat.  Need some drive time to get better feel but everything seems to be good so far!

You must have a mixed set of brackets,i.e. 61-64 style and 65-67 style as both should bolt up to same width. Early ones had the wider pattern thru the tubes, late were narrower thru the inboard tabs welded to the tubes.
