Horn, high or low? Empty Horn, high or low?

Post by Seth G Sun May 08, 2016 1:14 pm

My poor horn sounds like a dying animal. Not sure what the tone of the oem horn is. High or low or did any come with both? I see there is an extra lead @ the horn for another.

edit: I see now mine has "LO" cast into it so I guess it's a low.

Also, iirc, it mounts behind the grill on the passenger side with the mouth facing the drivers side, is this correct?

    Seth,
Mine has both although I haven't heard them yet (A project in progress). They are also on the passenger side, opening facing the driver side.

For what it's worth, the horns in my a100 were toast when I got mine. Tried the heck top free them up to work. I installed horns out of a 63 Imperial as the old were dead. I wanted to keep it in the Mopar family.

I have both horns on my 66 and they seem to give off 2 different sound frequencies. High and low. Both point toward the driver side, and are slightly tipped downward. I will try to post a pick later this week if someone else hasn't posted one.

Here's a quick cell phone video that my girlfriend took of me driving by and honking. It's pretty sharp and loud and I didn't even lay on it, just tapped it.

btw, the funny noise you hear in the back ground is Max the parrot putting in his two cents worth!

Most Econolines I have seen came with one horn, either high or low, with the other connector taped over. I think the Falcons and possibly others had the dual horn option, which is both high and low horns. Having both makes for a loud and rich sound.

Mine is only a single horn with just one connector. I was surprised how loud it was when I got it working again.

Yeah, that's totally different from mine. My mounting bracket has 2 bolts where it mounts to the chassis and the horn is more ear shaped, not square, and the bracket meets it at 2 bolts in a C on it's body on 2 studs out of the horn. Neat stuff, thanks for the pic.

The sound of a high and low horns together has a great sound . But with all the rain we have here (you know what I'm talking about Seth)  it seems like once a year I have to take him out WD4 them and smack him with a mallet  to get them to work again.  Without the high and the low it sounds like a VW bus. HA HA
BTW you can pick those up at the junkyard for only a couple of bucks

Yea the two horns together have a great sound. If I can get a video of them this weekend I will try to post it. I couldn't believe how loud they actually are. Impressive for 1966. How long will they last???? depends on how many idiots get in front of me...lol.

Keeping the mud wasps out of the horns can be a chore. I am thinking of a screen over the opening.

Mud wasps are a pain. More like hornets. I used to run into them in rooftop unit's, they can nest in the worst places. I've been fighting yellow jacket nests since I rolled the van outside.

dv8, I think that's the culprit and maybe mud wasps to. There's some stuff rattlin round in there dry. I beat/shook alot out after getting the mud and water out prior Wink I'd love to rebuild it but they rivet'd those babies together real good

Spray it with BP blast , whack it with a mallet and hook it up to a cordless drill battery until the to diaphragms loosen up .
