Engine Paint Color??? Empty Engine Paint Color???

Post by BlueSteel Tue Apr 07, 2015 10:22 am

I've been reading different things about the engine paint for the Ford eVans.  I believe I have the 170 on my 62 Falcon, but i could be totally wrong!

I'm changing the valve cover gasket (going with cork...is that better or worse than the rubber?, it what they had in stock).  I thought since I'm pulling the valve cover off I might as well repaint it as well, as the paint is looking rather ragged & flaking in places.

What color paint should I use? I have an Orange paint, but read that the Fords used Blue, but read in other places that the Orange is used for an engine size thats NOT the 170... just thought i'd consult the pros before doing anything Smile

    You guys rock Smile

thank you.  Can someone confirm that this is indeed a 170 for me? and what transaxle is this? (i do not know how to decode the stamp)

Early engines came with a black block and head. The 144's had a blue valve cover. 170's had a reddish orange valve cover.

This was the original color on my 61 with a latter 170 when I got it.

This was how I repainted it a few years ago. I used a Ford tractor color from my local Tractor Supply. I thought it was close enough for me.

This is a second 61 I have with a 144. It's dirty and dusty but you can see some of the blue color it is.

Sometime, I believe it was for the 65 model year Ford went to an all blue motor and it was a little darker than the earlier 144's were. This is my 67 240.

Thanks for including a picture of the door tag.  Whomever entered the data into the econoline.org website skipped the axle code and put the DSO in the wrong place. (I fixed it for you.) Ford did not line up the numbers very well on the tag, so it is an easy mistake to make.

Here is the direct link to your Econoline data.

You have a Falcon Deluxe Club Wagon that came with the 170 engine.  The 1962 Falcon Deluxe Club Wagon had the most deluxe interior. It was the top of the line in 1962.

Your transmission is the basic 3-speed Ford, commonly referred to as the "crashbox."  In 1963 Ford started using the much better Ford 3.03 3-speed transmission.  You can tell the difference easily. The crashbox has a removable cover on the side, whereas the Ford 3.03 has the cover on the top.  Details and pics here.  You can easily swap out your transmission with a 1963-1964 if you find one.  A 1965-1967 transmission will take a little more work, but can be swapped in as well.

You asked about the rear axle. You have the 7.25" rear axle with a 3.50:1 ratio.  A good balance between power and fuel economy. It is a good basic axle, but will not stand up to anything over a 200 engine.

BTW, your Falcon came through Kansas City on the way to the dealer, so it was initially sold somewhere near there.
