I hope to paint my van in the next few months, but I'm still playing around with colors. The van is currently "hot rod black" with red wheels and small hubcabs. PO was definitely going for the rat rod vibe, but that isn't my vision.
Simplest would be to paint it high gloss black (because I wouldn't have to paint the interior), but I think these earlies look best with lighter colors, more in the jelly bean palette. (Plus black, and other dark colors play up every imperfection. My '64's body is in excellent shape, but these things were't perfect when they were new.)
My '66 A100 from 30 years ago I painted yellow, and that is probably what this one will end up being. Not only for nostalia reasons, but I think it will look great against the black seats, carpet, etc. Not just any yellow, but I'm pretty set on a Chrysler color I've seen on recent PT cruisers and Crossfires. (funny 'cause I used Ford yellow on my old Dodge and now I'm thinking of using a Chrysler color on my Ford).
Recently however I was watching a repeat of My Classic Car and a guy had painted his 30's era hearse a mint green VW color. It's on a lot of the new bugs, so you probably will know it if you see it. I think it might just be different enough, but not so far out that it will be a turn off. I keep thinking about it. It worked very well on that old hearse.
So, what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards the safe route with yellow, but I can't get that green out of my mind!
And not totally out of the realm is british racing green. I know, it's a dark color, but I just re-painted my '91 Miata and it looks great. (I also had a '68 BRG MGB for 21 years, so it is a sentimental favorite).
PS - alternate suggestions welcome!!!!
