How to replace a side window Empty How to replace a side window

Post by Guest Sat Feb 28, 2009 1:19 am

Ok guys, a little help here. I picked up a side window for my A108 today at the junkyard. It was a pain getting the thing out because I had to tear the frame apart to retrieve it, but I havent the slightest clue how to put the new window in the right way.

Can someone give me specific instructions so that Its done right without damaging the window frame and the glass?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you are using the weatherstrip molding that has the locking spline in the middle of it.....then you REALLY need a tool. You can buy one or make one. I used the end off a spring and bent the end into a triangle that was the same shape as that spline and used vice grips to pull the tool along the groove while the spline would follow and lock itself in place. And spray silicone in the groove first.

Forgive my ignorance, but don't you have to mess with the rubber to get the glass in? scratch

ive allways used a couple of screwdrivers and a friend.,,, take baby steps shell pop in place ( me and screwdrivers in the inside and a helper outside holding the glass and adding pressure so it dont fall ).put the glass into the rubber then goes into the metal frame, thats how i put side windows into a van

I do tons of storefront glass, but I very rarely touch auto glass. These are from crlaurence.com and may help.

Are you talking about a window, with a metal frame, that opens?

The window Im trying to replace is my passenger door window that does roll up and down with no issues. It is cracked and I already have the replacement I picked up at the junkyard last week. It wasnt easy getting it out and the frame was destroyed in the process, so it wont go in the same way at it came out for sure. There will be me and a friend working on it together, I just need very specific instructions (and any pointers) on how to get the new glass back into the frame. Replacing this little window seems much harder than any hearse window because of the tiny size and the design of the frame.

Im referring to the front door window, yes the passenger side.

The glass is inside the door frame. You know the window you roll up and down, not the wing window. The glass sits on the regulators INSIDE the window frame, alongside the wing window.

Is there a way to get the old glass out and the new glass in without destroying anything? We had to destroy the window frame of the donor car because there didnt seem to be any other way to get the glass out. I didnt see any screws to unscrew and remove the upper part of the door/window frame.

I have a factory manual at home and can scan the appropriate pages for you. I've replaced one a long time ago and totally forget how it's done.

This is covered in the service manual. Front Door Glass: Removal 1. Remove lower trim panel. 2. Remove access panel. 3. Lower the door glass fully and remove vent wing assembly. 4. Disconnect door glass from regulator by sliding glass forward. 5. Remove inner belt weather strip from door. 6. Remove glass assembly from door. reverse this for installation my scanner is crap so I take pictures

That looks about right,,,,,the idea is that you need to remove the vent glass assembly for the door glass to slide up and out. BUT to get the vent out, you 1st need to slide the door glass down and towards the rear. And there is stuff stopping you from doing it, like the regulator,,,,,the lower rear channel,,,,,the upper weatherstripping,,,,,,and the 2 fuzzies that keep the water from rolling down the glass into the door. The door handle assembly might need to come out,,,,, Then the vent glass will need to be twisted and turned and pulled for it to come out,,,,,,,and it could be rough on a paint job,,,,,,,,,But basically EVERYTHING needs to come out before that window glass can be removed,,,,,,,,,

you don't need to take out the regulator or any latch parts, just the vent window, there are 3 screws holding it in. After the access cover is off the lower one is easy to see. the other 2 are hidden and you must open the vent to see them, one is at the front near the top, its between the rubber seal. The other one is near the latch, with those 3 screws out just tilt the vent mechanism back at the top with the glass down and lift it out. Only the GM ones have to be twisted to get the bottom bracket out.

And one more thing, I would soak the screws and bolts with penetrating oil,,,,,,,they may not be wanting to come out without stripping,,,,I think those phillip screws on the vent glass frame like to strip out, so be careful with those. But it depends on your van now on how much work you will have to do......
