Re: Tow bar test
,,,,just don't strip them out,,,,,,,I want to check out the thrust plate that holds the camshaft in,,,,,,,and that means remove the 2 screws,,,,,remove the lifters and pull the camshaft out,,,,,then press off the gear and remove the plate under it,,,,,,,,,,and Scott got started on it,,,,,and I will finish up the process tomorrow,,,,,,So,,,,,,today's job was to install a new rear main seal in my engine,,,,while I wait for parts and clean out all the broken camshaft gear teeth in my pan,,,,,,,

Re: Tow bar test
Now she looks pretty on the inside! Let's see how long this one lasts, let's see, Doni how many miles do you drive doing housecalls per year? You're a hell of a guy helping all these vanners out as much as you do!

Re: Tow bar test
Hey =doni- as im not a 6 cyl man = isnt there a oil slinger that goes on the crank ? before the timing cover is put on?? Chev V-8" have that . How is that gear area lubed? Is there an oil squirter coming out of the block area near that gearset?

Re: Tow bar test
I do a real lot of miles stopping over at all the guys vans,,,,,,like VanAgain is 50 miles from me,,,,,Surfer guy is a little bit closer,,,,,but I live in the mountains, so every trip is about 100 miles,,,,,,this engine could have 200,000 miles on it,,,,,,so timing gears are just a patch for it,,,,,,the crank gear is just pressed onto the crankshaft,,,,,there is no slinger behind it,,,,,,there is a squirter pipe between the gears that keep them lubricated with oil......but that camshaft gear is really made of some sort of cardboard fiber,,,,,they do wear out,,,,,,,so be ready,,,,if you crank the engine and the distributor rotor does not turn,,,,,,you know what happened......

Re: Tow bar test
yes -thanx =as i expected!1 All the old gears like that were made of ="phoenolic" My spelling is exact on that yet close. Yes they did leave some desireability-even the old flathead fords had that same type gear stuff amazing they ever lasted as long too. Thats y i previously asked if there wasnt some gears made from diff materials? as i seemed to remember something on that from 2-3 lifetimes ago!! Thanx again!!

Re: Tow bar test
When I was shopping for my replacements I saw the fiber gears listed but nobody had them in stock. Everyone I cam across had the iron crank gear and aluminum cam gear.
I ended up using a new CompCam set that a local guy had sitting on his shelf, just happy to sell it.
I opted to heat the cam gear and drop it on instead of pressing it on. I didn't have a press handy, and a friend of mine that's a mechanical engineer specializing in metals told me that it wouldn't effect the gear in any way by heating it that much.
I think the only thing I would do different is put the timing cover on before the oil pan. I tired putting the timing cover on a week after the oil pan and had a problem with the oil pan being a little high and keeping the timing cover a hair to high for the cover bolts.
On the road now though, purrs like a kitten.

Re: Tow bar test
The bottom timing cover gasket best if it goes on 1st,,,,then the oil pan goes on.....the instructions on the metal gear says cook them in oil at 225 degrees,,,,I heated them a little with a mapp gas torch until they slipped on,,,,, so,,,,cleaned and painted more parts,,,,,,time for a short road test,,,,,,,,

Re: Tow bar test
So you heated up the gears? And that made them easy to slip on the shafts? That's a good trick.
Looking nice and clean under there now! And it's great how you paint all the bolts and other parts contrasting colors so everything shows up better for us in your instructional photos!
Didn't hear back with the result of your test drive. Should we be worried?!

Re: Tow bar test
Your carb take down is perfect timing. I'm fighting with my carb right now. My carb is really beat up. The body has many stripped bolts. One thing puzzles me. The van is sucking down gas like crazy. This is new. If I fill the float bowl on the bench it will run out a hole in the base of the carb.

Re: Tow bar test
Sometimes this plug falls out,,,,,sometimes someone tightens the main jet too tight and it cracks the bowl,,,but mostly the pump diaphragm is leaking ,,,,,take the bottom off,,pour something into the bowl,,,,see where it comes out,,,,,,the pump will be leaking from a small hole right where I show the broken gasket,,,,,or look up in it above the throttleplate,,,,if its the pump, it will be leaking out of the middle slot, the one between the vacuum advance port and the mixture screw port.....

Re: Tow bar test
I am using a 69 Chevy Van 3 speed that we took out of my buddys van when we put in a 700R4,,,,,,,,I took out the worlds worst transmission,,,,,a 64-65 3 speed that is not synchronized and has no front seal in it,,,,,,,and Leftcoast 65 says his radiator has oil in it,,,,,,he takes it over to VanAgains,,,,,removes the head,,,,,I check it,,,it is really warped and the valves are leaking, so The Surfing Guy brings over the shop cylinder head and we install it until he can get his head rebuilt,,,,,,

Re: Tow bar test
So the 69 3 speed is still 4 bolt side cover? I thought the better 3 speed had a 7 bolt side cover.
On a side note, you guys are welcome to my old 230. The bottom end has 40psi of oil pressure all the time and it never mixed water and oil. The head might make a good core for having a spare. I'm sure it needs guides and unleaded seats.
