sounds like maybe two things are going on. One being maybe somehow the shifter or cable is jamming up, and two its not allowing the neutral safety switch to be activated allowing you to start the engine. Check the neutral safety switch. There is a small possibility IT is somehow jamming up the shifter causing both problems, otherwise it seems somehow two separate things may be happening at once.

Just dealt with a similiar issue on JD's van. The cable broke at the top and wouldnt let it start because it was barely into park. Try Inspecting the cable at the shifter. If yours has two cables coming out of the shifter its the one on the drivers side that is the shift cable that controls gear selection. I was able to drop the shifter out behind the dash without unhooking the cables and set up the shifter in my lap after adjusting the cable at the transmission to check function.

Good luck on finding a cable. Sad I had to repair the existing cable which had already been repaired previously. We are still looking for a replacement for his van. I bet if you can afford some downtime you need to remove the cable and have it repaired locally. It is important that it is repaired to the correct length. To remove it you have to drop the pan and unhook the cable end from inside the transmission. To get the shifter assembly off the dash you have to remove he 4 screws on the bezel then there should be 4 more screws behind that. Then carefully drop the whole thing out of the bottom of the dash being careful not to tear up the wiring. Once thats out you can unhook the cable from there and get it fixed.

That cable is not cheap. you can try a local and see if they can make it. a company in Detroit made mine . About 5 years ago it was around $100.00 now it's over $300.00 plus shipping. http://www.imperialservices.net/Truckpart.html

This company makes universal throttle cables inside of plastic sleeves. Maybe it can be used for the shifter? They offer various types of end connectors. The most expensive is $56.49. Wouldn't hurt to look into it.

If you removed it from the shifter you need to be carefull with those prongs so they don't brake and the same thing down below at the tranny.

was very carefull in removal from shifter assembly - the cable was replaced before I think the cable was incorrect length it dangled loose I had to secure it so it would not rest on exhaust - lots of play so cable had areas of slack that put pressure on eyelet connected to shifter and it eventually crimped up in the shifter and broke off.

I echo the need for the correct size.
I measured the cable installed to 8ft 6in.i think too long but I could be wrong.
I was able to use pliers and find neutral to start so neutral safety switch is working.got it started and was able to find rev gear - drive gears but I had trouble finding park- did not want to push my luck and left it in neutral

I left cable attached to trans until I find replacement just to be on safe side

thanks for all the expert advise and welcome more

Im definitely NOT an expert on this stuff amigo. But thenka for the undeserved compliment! Very Happy

Im sorry to hear about the loss of your cable. Sad When you can find a new one you should have a funeral for it because they're so hard to find.

Look up boat repair in your area. They can build new push/pull cables or repair yours. Also remember to lube the pivots in the shifter while you have it out.In my area there is a speedometer shop that makes cables.

Boat outboard engine steering cables are push/pull units and can easily be incorporated. I use them to operate my manual trans gears. Can be bought starting from roughly 100 inch length onwards in 20 inch intervals to at least 300 inch length.
