Where'd first gear go? Empty Where'd first gear go?

Post by bubbafrye Mon Oct 22, 2012 12:43 pm

I'm driving into work today, and it's like first gear just disappeared!

I left from a hill in first just fine. Tried to pull away from a light 2 minutes later with it in first and the motor just revved like I was in neutral. [I jumped to second and was on my way]

I tried getting it into first a few times after that, and while it feels like the linkage is moving into place, there is no engagement. Reverse is fine, as is 2nd & 3rd.

Any off the cuff thoughts, or am I doomed to take off in second forever?

I would go down by the transmission and push the side lever into 1st gear and see if that gets you into gear,,,,see if the lever has not come loose from the shaft,,,,then you will know if the problem is in the linkage or in the trans,,,,

Sorry for the late update... I got home and spent a few minutes digging around under the van an finally saw a tell-tale 'clean' spot on the linkage where the arm had slipped about 2 inches. That was letting me get into reverse fine, but there was not enough travel to get into first. You totally called it Dix. I slid the linkage back into place and tightened up the nut [as well as the 2nd/3rd arm] and all has been good for days.

I love this forum for all the tips that come up. Thanks guys!
